pondering the 2014 season

I understand rosters arent set and there is alot of unknowns still to be determined in preseason, but just glancing at the schedule, i have a few questions for y'all.

which game do you think will be the toughest / which game most concerns you?

why?

which opponents do you think the Panthers match up favorably against?

why?

IMHO, the most concerning game will be the home game against New Orleans. as much as i hate to admit it, New Orleans is a good team (for at least one more year). And the Panthers will be coming of a very tough stretch of games. i feel like the Saints and Panthers will be tied for the division lead or within one game of one another for the lead, which will make this a very important match up. i am concerned about the Saints dealing the Panthers a home loss due to the stakes of the game and fatigue on the part of the Panthers.

i think the toughest game will be against the Packers in their house. Aaron Rodgers. thats all i need to say. unless our offense is just as prolific (or our defense plays like the '85 Bears), that could be a very hard game for the Panthers to win.

the match-up i feel the best about is the Vikings game. yes it will be fuggin cold playing outside in Minnesota, but i get the impression that Minny is going to be just as terrible this year as they were last year. i dont think that game will even be close.

what say you?

I think the Saints and Seahawks will be our toughest opponents.

The Saints passing attack, with pitch and catch Jimmy Graham, and the way they'll run screen plays with Cooks, or some other fast guy out in space is a nightmare to try and stop. And their defense is just good enough to give a limited offense a lot of trouble.

We're better equipped to to play the Seahawks this season than we were last season imo. The Hawks we're vulnerable to our read-option in the past, but our o-linemen blocked poorly and screwed it up. This season we have much better linemen for run blocking and that should really help to get our read-option going.

I think Bucs and Vikings are going to be the worst teams we play this season. We need to sweep the Bucs, and we should stomp the Vikings.

I feel 50/50 about the rest of the games at this point. I wish we had a lot of terrible teams on our schedule, like the Jags and Raiders, but it didn't work out that way.

Now if Benji turns into a TD machine then I'll feel a lot better about this season. It's just hard to predict what you'll get from a rookie WR.

Seattle for obvious reasons will be the toughest.  After that I would say the road games against Green Bay and New Orleans.  Both are on the road in a tough places.  Rodgers is the best QB in the game (in my opinion at least) and Brees is in the top three.

Home games against Chicago and New Orleans and the visit to Philadelphia will also be very tough.

The only games I look at an feel great about are @Minnesota and hosting Cleveland.  The Minnesota game particularly since we are coming off a bye.  I know Rivera loses those but logic states that it is an advantage.

The home opener vs Detroit is concerning to me, never will we need our Dline to creat havoc more than this game! We can't allow stafford to sit back there and throw it up to megatron and Ebron, not to mention the rookie Turner and Amini coming off his injury going against Suh, I will be holding my breath on a lot of cam drop backs! Khalil will have to be huge in protection that day and provide help for the youngsters! But in the end it's the NFL every week is a challenge

I'm interested to see how we match up against Chicago this year more than anything.  Our bigger CBs v. Alshon/Brandon and how many times we can take down Cutler.  Not to mention their improved pass rush versus our o-line.  It's gonna be a good matchup methinks.

I think i am most worried about the Saints at home because they are better there and it is a division game. (might as well be worth two wins)

So it is more important. I do feel Chicago will be a huge test for our defense. They have giant receivers and a great RB. Not extremely worried about their defense, but it will be hard stopping Marshall and Co. I see Vikings as easiest. I just keep seeing KB lined up against Munnerlyn.

The next one we play. Because it's the only one that matters.

Now that I have the cliche out of the way I think all of the division games and Seattle will most likely be the hardest. Greenway ranks up there too but I really want to see what the d does to contain Rodgers. Can't wait till we get some football.

do you still think the Vikings will be one of the two most terrible teams we play?

im torn between Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Minny right now. i still think the Bucs will get much better as the season goes on

I think the Bucs will get a little better as the season moves along, but they have a low ceiling with McCown at QB, not to mention their o-line. We need to sweep them and we should.

The Vkings are looking better than I thought they would be, but they played the Rams, possibly the worst team in the NFL. I kind of like the Steelers.

    • I know that. I'm not predicting it. Just putting the information out there so I will have receipts for later on when this dude turns into a stud at this level too.  It's kinda bittersweet, he'd help our offense out a great deal, but I'm wanting a QB next draft, so adding another weapon for Bryce is counterproductive in that regard.
    • I'm not sure if NO will be as QB aggressive as some assume.  They may focus on landing a top line prospect and slow rolling the rebuild for next year.  Could see them roll the dice in R3-4 to compete with Rattler, maybe a Howard fit.     I think the QB starved team's just take the gamble the Saints don't want Sanders, and target a mid to late 1st pick for a trade up to land him.  Still don't think Milroe or Shough are going R1.   But I think what may get lost in the trade up talk is about it being QB specific. A top team trying to get over the top could be the juicy trade (or two) that happens in round 1. Something I've flirted with is how aggressive Buffalo could be.  They have the ammunition for a big trade up, and I think Golden would pair super well with Coleman.  They need to cut to the chase and get playmakers there for Allen.  So yeah, love the idea of a BUF/ATL trade where they move up for him.  I'm even thinking about LAR getting aggressive for Warren or Loveland.  Imagine McVay rolling into 2026 with that added piece for a future QB...
    • Unfortunately, Ice, there are some blueprints of hybrid LB/edge players who were busts too--Everette Brown is one, but he was forced into a 4-3 DE role here.  I would say that the 3-4 defense has a lot of wiggle room for hybrids at the OLB/Edge position--I am just not seeing Walker as an elite player at any one role.  Coverage?  Rushing the passer from the 9?  And at his size... If we take him, I hope that I am wrong because there are some personalities I really would love to be on this roster.  Jihaad Campell is one.  Bech is another.
