David Newton: Impressions from 8/5 practice

After today's camp, I am thinking that a few more people are going to jump on the Kelvin Benjamin bandwagon. That's right. Get on now. Hedge your bets! Don't be skeered!

You've read this before, but I keep repeating it because it keeps happening. Rookie wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin had another big day, catching two touchdown passes on the left side. Both were high, and both required the 6-foot-5 receiver to adjust his body in midair. I haven't seen Benjamin drop a pass in team drills, and nobody else I've spoken with has, either. He wasn't perfect on Tuesday, though. On what was supposed to be an alley-oop pass near the goal line he apparently didn't run the route correctly, forcing Camewton to look for another receiver. It resulted in an incompletion. Newton and wide receivers coach Ricky Proehl immediately spoke to Benjamin about it, demonstrating the kind of communication and chemistry that has been strong.

And Gil Brandt just wasn't complimentary of the developing beast that is Kelvin Benjamin, he also noted that Superman is alive and well.

Speaking of Newton, long-time NFL talent evaluator Gil Brandt said Newton threw the ball Tuesday "as well as I've ever seen him."

D. Newton also basically suggested that this corner thing may not work out for Charles Godfrey.  I wonder what that's going to mean in the grand scheme of things, but looking at the way things have been going, it's not necessarily a positive development for Godfrey. He's still shaking off the rust though.  And Benwikere does need a backup

Charles Godfrey opened as the starting nickel back over rookie Bene' Benwikere and was immediately beaten on a corner route by Benjamin. He later came back and made a good read on a pass over the middle, but dropped what should have been an interception. It appears if Godfrey is to help this team it will be at the nickel and not as an every down corner.

D. Newton also asked Rivera to name some players that have done a notable job, but who may not be getting the love.

I asked Rivera to name a few players who have practiced well but not gotten the recognition that some of the high-profile players have. He started with undrafted wide receiver Marcus Lucas out of Missouri. He also mentioned backup center Brian Folkerts, referring to his nickname of "Caveman Center" with a story I'll share at a later date. He also likes what backup defensive end Mario Addison and backup safety Colin Jones have done.

It's always good to hear directly from the coach about unheralded players.  I am pretty sure that Addison, Jones and Folkerts are locks. If Lucas continues to work hard and impress then maybe he can assure himself of a back-up spot as well.  I am pretty sure that Lucas will get a spot on the practice squad if nothing else (but beware Bill Belichick). I would hate to see a 6'4" rookie receiver with potential get swiped away by a vulture.  I must admit, I am rooting for Lucas to make an undeniable case.

Gil is one of the few, I listen to what they report. I just hope peeps hold back on special k having some 1,200 yard 8 TD season like some huddlers are writing in stone. Go back to the draft threads and find me driving the kevin bandwagon, then hearing he tested 7 wonderlic I stopped driving, but strongly remained on the wagon. Kevin has the skills to be a top five WR, just need some time.

I wanna hear the 'caveman' center story. Hope Newton prints it soon.

Old gross gives nicknames to all the players, cause there are sooooo many players coming and going. That's the one he gave brian folkerts and it stuck so did folkert.

Are you.... David Newton?

Nah, man.  Let me just put it like this: David Newton appears to be a likeable guy. If most of you knew me as a person you'd probably like me also, but many really don't want to hear what I have recently resumed writing about.

So, no, we are certainly not the same. I just respect David Newton for doing what he does, and I think he is doing just as good a job as any (and certainly better than the guy who could ultimately care less about the success of the team).  From NASCAR to the NFL may be a little bit of a culture shock for some.

I'm not big believer in Godfrey.  The backfield seemed a lot better without him last year and I just don't think that was a coincedence.  Through out the years I watched him, he always seemed to be a step out of position or miscommunication or something....I don't know, I just never felt he had the football brain he needed to have back there; but, that's just my opinon.  He was given a huge contract by Hurney, so what do I know.

On KB.  Let's see how  he does in real games first.  No doubt on his talent; but, let's see how he does in real games, with better CBs aggravating him.  I hope he is great...be awesome to have a #1 again....and if not that, at least a threat that scares teams, that they have to scheme for, like they used to have do with Smith.

But, as Gman said, you can't teach 6'5" tall.

Let's just pray for no injuries in these wretched preseason games.
