Rookie Watch 2014 - A Promising Start

Why is everyone failing to grasp the original argument. The argument was that a player drafted in round two or three has to make an impact right away. That's just not true.

The rebuttal was that a player needs to make an impact at some point in his career. Has Hurney's later picks?

I don't know, you tell me. Have Kalil, Hardy, Johnson, Wharton, Mathis, Hangartner, Schwartz, Witherspoon, Anderson and Munnerlyn made "impacts"?

Probably less than Silatolu, Short, Ealy, White, Lester, Barner, Klein, Turner, Benwikere, Brown, Lucas, Dockery, and Reaves.

And my post is sarcastic due to the fact that you're comparing multiple years to 1 year. Plus an offseason. But your list includes players that made minimal impact. So can mine.

I'm not comparing anything actually. I was crushing a misconception. That's all. Who on that list made a minimal impact?

But that's still less than 30% hit on actual picks after round one. And I would not even call some of those "hits".

Again, who on that list wouldn't be a "hit"?

After Johnson you could probably only argue Munnerlyn, and we know how this fan base felt about him. None that I mentioned were ever great starters, but starters and even back-ups to a talent deprived team. Some aren't even in the nfl anymore and the Panthers either punted them off the team or they are hidden in someone's depth chart.

Hangartner: Fifth round pick who lasted 9 years in the league and could probably still be in it as a backup if he wanted to be. 84 career starts.

Schwartz: Seventh round pick who's still in the league going on year 7 and is a valuable depth player.

Anderson: Third round pick. In the league for 9 years now. Was a standout LB in 2010 and 2011 while with the Panthers.

Wharton: Third round pick. 10 year vet in the league. 111 career starts.

Mathis: Going into year 10 in the league as a third round pick. Regarded as one of (if not the) best Guards in the NFL.

Sorry, all of those guys were/are hits.

Maybe in your book, but if you would have read my earlier post you would know how I would classify a hit.

A seventh rounder being a Pro-Bowler? That's just not realistic dude. All of those guys were hits,

What part of I was "proving a misconception wrong" doesn't make sense? Dude says Hurney never found talent past round one. I gave a list of some very talented even elite players drafted by Hurney post first round, and some others who were good and exceeded their selection. That's it. This wasn't me championing Hurney as the greatest GM ever because he isn't. It wasn't me saying he's better than Gettleman, because it's far too early to tell, and it's trending Gettleman's way (though Kug was a fuging ridiculous pick). It was me simply correcting an incorrect statement. Nothing more, nothing less. Continue with trying to make my comment into something it wasn't though....

    • his height, size and arm will forever cause problems and limitations...that is what it is.  I think to a degree, the law of averages is just coming into play a bit with him.  So as he plays more and more, you just flat out get the decent days mixed in too.  Which is just going to happen.
    • Good point. He's definitely better in 10-15 yards. I think that's his biggest improvement. But he wasn't 3-10 +15, he was 3-7, with at least one drop (minor but still). And with multiple passes at 14 yards completed. This passing chart doesn't look like at By one, lol. He threw more "deep" passes than Mahomes (NOT comparing him to Mahomes in a skill way lol), or at least more beyind 10 yards.
    • Karlaftis and Danna have been pretty inconsistent so teams have been doubling Jones and able to contain their pass rush.   But the good thing is that yesterday, we schemed well against Steve Spags Defense, Canales married the surrounding personnel with his QB through play designs within his comfort zone and was able to get downfield at will.  He was able to execute higher difficulty throws and look a lot more comfortable.  It tells me that Canales has a good system in mind, and had an edge gameplanning wise against Spagnuolo - which is nice to see.  It's a bit to see-saw at times with either going way too pass heavy or way too run heavy, but I think he's finding out what works.  It takes time to have it come together, and sure, I could see regression happen against a better front-7, but this was good for the entire system gelling.
