Wow. 4 out of how many?

All that I have to say is look at the 2011 draft. Cam will be the only one still on the team after Pilares gets cut this year.

Does that not change the point that three of the top five players on our team were Hurney drafted players outside of round 1? Unless you're trying to argue that Kalil, CJ and Hardy aren't talent I'm really not sure what was incorrect about me pointing out that Hurney did in fact find "talent" outside of round 1.

I could add more too...

Foster

Witherspoon

Anderson

Wharton

Hangartner

Mathis

Schwartz

King

And I'm sure there's some UDFA's in there you could add as well. Sorry, but Hurney found "talent" past round 1, and to say so is completely incorrect.

All of those world breakers....

My point is proven. How many of those years were winning years?

Kalil

CJ

Hardy

Captain

I'm not saying Hurney was a great GM or anything, but that comment is just ignorant.

Oh yes Captain surely made up for trading away the first round pick or how about trading up for Jimmy Clausen. There is nobody left on this team from the 2009 Draft, 1 player from 2010 and 2 from 2011. I'm not going to get into a complete rundown of Hurney's Draft History but the guy had a knack for nabbing good first round talent but outside of that it was hit or miss.

So we're measuring talent of individual players by team wins now?

So like most NFL GM's then....got it!

Dollars to donuts that before the 3rd preseason game a dumpster fire OT is found

No way in this world can they subject Newton to Bell and Chandler without nothing but 2 TE sets

That, is the position that makes or breaks the Panthers this season.

Stating the obvious but no OTs is my reason for being cautious with the Panthers...that running game up the middle best get smoking

Through the draft:

*denotes unproven but has potential as a starter.

Defense anchors (round):

Hurney Picks: Luke Kuechly(1), Thomas Davis(1), Greg Hardy(6), Charles Johnson(2).

Gettleman Picks: Star Lotulelei(1)

Winner: Hurney

Offense anchors (round):

Hurney Picks: Cam Newton(1), DeAngelo Williams(1), Ryan Kalil(2), Amini Silatolu(2)*

Gettleman Picks: Kelvin Benjamin(1)*, Trai Turner(3)*

Winner: Hurney

Free Agent anchors (Starting at position multiple seasons including 2014)

Hurney: Mike Tolbert, Greg Olsen, Byron Bell

Gettleman: Dwan Edwards

Winner: Hurney

While I did not care for Hurney as a GM and his lack of consistency in the NFL Draft, I dislike Gettleman even more. Gettleman has not done much to replace the foundation left by Hurney.

This is still Hurney's team. Gettleman has done little in 2 off-seasons to supplant what Hurney laid out. When I see Gettleman have free agents going to the Pro Bowl and banking key starters outside the 1st round, then we can talk. Gettleman has only improved the DT position and nothing else compared to Hurney's impact everywhere else. Gettleman has an opportunity with the OT, WR, OLB, and DB areas, but those are the constant areas to question even with Gettleman having 2 off-seasons under his belt.

Yes, Hurney was not great and messed up the draft several times. Hurney has still left a young foundation that is on the cusp of greatness. Do not award all of that to Gettleman. Will Gettleman give us any pro bowl picks in his first 3 off seasons? 1 more year to go to answer that question. Hurney gave the fans back to back rookie of the years and defensive player of the year. Not to mention all our pro bowl and all pro caliber players. Not Gettleman.

So, hush on this Gettleman butt love and Hurney hatred until he proves something more than mediocre talent and solid starters. Can he at least land a worthwhile free agent that stays on the team?

In all honesty, Gettleman does not even come close in his first two off seasons to the success Hurney had as a GM. Will Gettleman even come close to matching what Hurney did in his first two seasons as GM? Hurney replaced the former regime and drafted 6 key starters and brought in 4 key free agents which led to the 2003 Super Bowl. That is nearly replacing half of the core team, which Gettleman has not done in his first two off seasons. And 4 of the 10 Hurney brought in his first 2 off seasons went to the Pro Bowl.

Argue with those facts.

Neither will any of us.

That sounds quite conservative, if we believe if he will be as good as he's shown/indicating.

1000 yards (give or take a few) and 8-14 TD's sounds right.

700 yards 4 TDs would be close to his floor for me. Don't want to get too excited but I really do believe he could get near 1,000 yards and ~8-9 TDs.

At this point in camp it's already apparent he will be our WR1, the 700 yards and 4TDs came from the production we had from last year's WR1 position. I'm really expecting a good bit more, but figured I'd look at it from a replacement standpoint. I think we stand a very good chance of having a greatly improved receivers corps, including the TEs.

That wasn't the point of my comment at all. I think Gettleman is a fine GM. He may be a little overhyped by our fanbase in just his second year, but he's also done some really good things already. My point was to point out how idiotic it is to say Hurney didn't find talent past round one. CJ was a third round pick btw.

I am a tad concerned about Ealy. A 2nd round pick needs be be starter quality out the gate imo. He seems like a project that for some odd reason I don't think will ever reach with his 2nd round expectations. The gay dude from Mizzo outshined him all last season.

Ugh I hope I am dead wrong about this.

Being concerned about Ealy in year one is just silly. It took till his fourth season for Charles Johnson to do anything more than flash in the NFL. DE is notoriously hard to transition to in the NFL more times than not.

    • Karlaftis and Danna have been pretty inconsistent so teams have been doubling Jones and able to contain their pass rush.   But the good thing is that yesterday, we schemed well against Steve Spags Defense, Canales married the surrounding personnel with his QB through play designs within his comfort zone and was able to get downfield at will.  He was able to execute higher difficulty throws and look a lot more comfortable.  It tells me that Canales has a good system in mind, and had an edge gameplanning wise against Spagnuolo - which is nice to see.  It's a bit to see-saw at times with either going way too pass heavy or way too run heavy, but I think he's finding out what works.  It takes time to have it come together, and sure, I could see regression happen against a better front-7, but this was good for the entire system gelling.
    • This was evident first two weeks of season. I don’t see any issues with physical tools since he came back. I think he is a player that must play with confidence to overcome those size limitations and he’s doing that.
    • Still 3-10 on passes over 15 yards.  At least he's not scared to merely attempt them anymore.  Where I see improvement is the 10-15 yard range.  He was 6-6.  Bryce of old was scatter shot on anything beyond 10 yards and the further out, the worse the accuracy.
