Guardians of the Galaxy

After last night's preview shows generated more than $11 million, the $70 million that Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy was expected to generate at the U.S. box office has been raised to $90 million, Variety reports.

The film outpaced Captain America: The Winter Soldier's first night and that film went on to generate $95 million. On the other hand, Cap 2opened at 10 p.m., limiting the number of screenings as compared to the 7 p.m. opening of Guardians.

Even the $70 million projection would have seen it pass The Bourne Ultimatum as the biggest August opening weekend of all time. The $90 million would obviously blow that record away as well as making it one of the biggest non-sequel openings in Marvel's studio history (bested only by Iron Man's $98 million opening and The Avengers's massive $200 million-plus haul, although most cound The Avengers as a kind of collective sequel anyway).

I came.  It was fuging awesome, even if I was expecting it to be.  Left the theater smiling more than I have since Pacific Rim last year.  I'm getting in touch with my inner 12 year old, fug the rest of you.

BTW, I half think the after credits sequence was a subtle tip of the cap to Disney's OTHER newly acquired automatic money generator...and a movie they produced back in the day that just happened to be a Marvel character was too good of a way to pass up.

I hope they use him like they do in the current Marvel universe. He's just there to move the story along. And you'll only see him briefly.

Also I think I'm going again when the theater isn't so crowded to look up all those known associates they list. The only one I could remember was Lylla

As someone who is a Mavell junkie and knows the Guardians well, I can say the amount of exposition was frustrating and made some dialogue feel out of place at times for me, though I probably should have expected it.

That said, I still really enjoyed the film a lot and thought it was a great entry into the film MCU. Also, the first time I saw it was in 2D and the second in 3D, and for the first time ever, I have to recommend 3D. Really enhances the movie even if the glasses still suck.

I agree some of the exposition seemed unnatural, but it was probably necessary given that 90% of viewers had never heard of any of these characters, unlike a Iron Man or Captain America.

I read that James Gunn actually sat in on the 3D conversion, unlike most every other post converted 3D film. Gunn said he chose every scene that would use the 3D effect and used the sense of depth to help tell the story. It was fantastic, especially in IMAX 3D. The shots of Knowhere come to mind.

I saw the trailer on this months ago and thought it looked stupid. Upon hearing all the glowing reviews from the likes of Kurb I went and saw it with Joscott and my son today. Excellent flick... Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Pratt was great and Zoe Saldana is smoking. Lots of action and laughs.

One more complaint in that Ronan and Yondu were portrayed a bit out of character. Ronan has always been a circumstantial villain that is actually pretty likable with his honor and such (especially when he's on your side.) Yondu has actually been a Guardian and in my experience has always been a pretty good guy.

It didn't detract from the movie, but as with the Extremis plot in IM3, I wonder if it would have been better if they stayed truer to the source material

Still good, just musing.
