Pats claim RB Tyler Gaffney off waivers

Yeah, that's why it stings right now... it's like, "if you wanted him, then why didn't you pick him, asshole?"

But there's also that thought of, "but... what if he does end up being really good?"

To be honest, when we picked him I was surprised, because I thought he was already gone by at least the 3rd round... I was surprised he dropped that far. It just sucks...

Yeah even if he was healthy it would have been work to make the team and become a star. I'm not 100% sure we don't get him back either. The Patriots could bring him in for a physical and waive him again in which case he should revert back to our IR. I think the only scenario where the Patriots get to keep him is if he stays on the 90 man roster until cuts.

How? He did the best he could with the cap room in FA. The WRs signings were solid, signed a solid corner, two veteran safeties (although I think Harper is nearly done), and a solid number 2 TE. Only thing he really didn't do was sign or draft an LT which the staff has said they have faith in Chandler/Bell. Sure maybe he hasn't a great offseason but to say he has had an horrible one is not accurate in my opinion.

dude dont even try. if people want to have cone vision and judge things as of fact before things happen to play out, let them. what seems like mistakes coulod end up being smart in the end.. like a lot of what happened like last offseason. if people cant see the full spectrum and everything effects each other, then thats their problem. annoying and immature, i know

Did the panthers do something similar to this to get Tavarres King off waivers from Denver?

Totally different situation. King was waived because the Broncos wanted a different player more. We waved/injured Gaffney because he had a season ending injury. If he had cleared waivers Gaffney would have stayed with the Panthers and been paid his full salary. If King would have cleared waivers he would have become a Free Agent. Or, as it were, jobless.

No. He wasn't waived/injured. He was healthy and we claimed him to be on our 53 roster. Offseason cuts ≠ season cuts.

To those of you trying to see the "bright side" of the situation by rationalizing the fact that he's done nothing in the NFL is kinda dumb. This kid put up 1700 yds from scrimmage last year, and was a real bruiser.

Keep telling yourself that he wasn't going to make an impact if you want to. The truth if the matter is that Ron himself has said on the record, that he was going to be a big part of what we were going to do this year. He was the insurance on our running attack, and had proved that he would have made a difference from what he did in college. His knee injury isn't even the ACL. That tells me that, while serious enough to sideline him for the year, he will become a factor in this league sometime in the near future.

Even if you don't believe that to be true, please believe we wasted a pick and 100K.

That's a fact jack!

After reading your last several posts and opinions on this matter and the FO in general, I am not surprised you signed off with a catch phrase from fugging duck dynasty.

So basically now and in coming years the entire league should see the Patriots early IR players as eligible for immediate relocation, right?

Belichick is noted for calling other teams and asking them not to claim his players by saying he will return the favor for them on one player they designate. But if you refuse he will poach a player for spite. He did it to the Vikings.

    • True.  Sam and Baker did not do well here but went on to better things under better coaching, circumstances or both.  The real question is, ‘why aren’t the Panthers able to get improved performance out of ‘broken toys’, similar to Minnesota and Tampa? That is a rhetorical question.  I think we know the answer.   [The cultural reference to Pogo dates me, I admit.]
    • Did I mention that he was on worse teams?  Yes.  Do QBs alone win games?  No.  Did Cam, on a much better team with some awesome defenses ever have 2 consecutive winning seasons?  No.  So now you are cherry picking,  If the overall stats are similar, you take a look at him.   I told you that you look at his skill set---but you wanted to tell me that he sucks and mentioned performance.  I just presented performance--and his numbers are very similar to Cam Newton's numbers--a player most call the best Panther QB ever--and I agree.  By the way, Fumbles are evidence of how bad his OL has been--so you are saying that a QB in a situation worse than Cam's who has stats and physical abilities very similar to Cam's should not be given a look when you have Bryce Young at QB?  You are going with that story because you simply talked your way into a corner and now you are trying to save face.  No good GM would do what you suggest because "he sucks."  Sorry, but the facts do not support you.  But no matter what eye-opening details I provide, there are some who are going to go their Google machines to try to find some reason to support an ignorant approach to developing the QB position.  You ignored the similarities to Cam and went cherry picking.  I know what you are doing--but I am only suggesting (as I have stated before) that we bring him in as one of three approaches to resolving the QB issue. Compete with Bryce and draft a QB. Basically, I am suggesting that Jones has the potential to replace Dalton and compete with Young.  He is a battered stock that could get better in a better situation--that is human nature.  Instead, I am called a Daniel Jones lover and superfan.  That is good debate--But a real sign of mature thinking is the inability to LOGICALLY consider alternative perspectives--which is actually a characteristic of intelligence.  Just so you know, I critique and perform research in my job.  I am often amazed at how the numbers do not support my suppositions.  I learned that my impression is often wrong until I look at the data.  In this case, I have considered all the important variables and he should get a shot.  Numbers don't lie--and when you and others resort to twisted name calling directed toward the poster--it verifies my position.
    • I don’t get this, I know that is the popular thought process but I just don’t think it’s true.  For instance head to head last year the ACC had a winning record against the SEC.  The SEC had a losing record in bowl games. This year so far the head to head is 2-3 SEC and that’s with a fluke Vandy win in week one.  I see the ACC taking another head to head winning season after next week.  The SEC is mostly hype with 3 good teams, in my opinion.  But to say any ACC team would get exposed I believe is a stretch
