On the Jonathan Stewart cap hit talk....

He plays a devalued position and we are paying him like a #1 WR.  I can't tell you how much I hate Marty Hurney,

Here is a good read on the devaluing of the RB position.

This article talks about the lack of production after the age of 27,  Stewart is 27.

This is a look at our teams salary breakdown per position going into 2014.  Thought this doesn't take into  account the egregious amounts these contracts will balloon into in the future, it does indicate that only 4 teams in the NFL pay more than us.  The Vikings, Bills, Eagles, and Titans.  And only one of those teams made the playoffs in 2013.

You csn basically break eve next season if you make him a. June 1 cut. 5 mill dead money the following season, but one could argue the savings in the final 2 years are wOrth the temp pain

Bingo.

And with cam and luke contracts coming there may not be much of a choice.

IM sure the same could have been said about Dwill when he was on IR for 2 years.

Except this never actually happened. You've told and bloated this lie up so many times you've started to believe it.

He was IR'd in Week 14 of the 2009 season with a small time injury because the season was virtually over and then the following season was his IR year-in which he still played 6 games.

At least Deangelo plays.

Unless I'm neglecting some other information, here's the breakdown of Jonathon's cap/dead money situation.

If he was a June 1st cut next year, it spreads his dead money cap hit over 2 seasons.

In 2015 we would save 1.5 mil

In 2016 we would save  2.75 mil

In 2017 we would save  5.5 mil  Total savings = 9.75 mil

If we keep him in 2015 and cut him outright in 2016.....

In 2016 we would save 2.25 mil

In 2017 we would save  5.5 mil   Total savings =7.75 mil

If we keep him in 2015 and designate him as a June 1st cut in 2016.....

In 2016 we would save 5.9 mil

In 2017 we would save 4.6 mil   Total savings =10.5 mil

Basically it looks like it boils down to paying  2 mil to keep him next year. If he looks anything like his old self, I don't see us letting him go. If this year looks like the last two years, he could be gone. Gettlemen will have a decision to make based off his 2014 performance.

Stewart was arguably Hurney's greatest mistake and showed how badly Marty could misread the market.

In one of the deepest RB drafts in recent memory when RB had started to become severely devalued, Marty Hurney drafted a RB with the 13th pick. Meanwhile T was such a huge need he traded back into the first round to get one. That, of course, started the 2 year cycle of doom where we had no 1st rounders and nothing to show for it in the end.

I wouldn't say greatest mistake. Looking back at the 2008 draft, I think Stewart was the best RB tooken that year in the first round (McFadden, Steward, Felix Jones, Chris Johnson, Mendenhall). I do agree that NFL has changed were you dont need to be drafting RB's in the first round though.

Hindsight is always 20/20......

He has not been better that Chris Johnson.

meh thats debatable. I think Stewart is a better RB than Johnson period (running, blocking, etc).  Johnson is just fast and has had the oppourtunity to be the  1 rb. My opinion is.......

More carries=more yards=more exposure=more hype.

Like I said though, that is debatable. What I do remember about that draft was that analyst were all over mendehall...... Ha jokes on them!
