Godfrey:I'm full go

I still don't understand the position change assuming we could have gotten him to renegotiate for a similar deal to remain our starting safety. Are you guys that confident that both Decoud and Harper will be better than Godfrey? I say we should have let them battle it out in camp, and brought in another experienced cb to compete for nickelback. Rivera seemed really high on Godfrey's game at safety before he got hurt, so it just doesn't make sense to me unless there's just something about his game that makes them think he could be a top-tier nickelback.

I think he has college experience at CB. Couple that with familiarity with the system and the new renegotiated contract coming off an injury thing it makes sense that he would get a shot.

Thanks for the reply. I still don't get it. Yes, he has college experience at CB, but he has pro experience at safety. And I don't see why his injury would make him any better at cb than safety. And my point was that we should be just as concerned about depth and competition at safety as we are at nickelback, so I don't see why we'd feel the need to give him "a shot" at nickelback. He was fine at safety, and right now, we don't have much behind two veterans who've never played in our system. That's why this move doesn't make sense to me unless they think he can be a top-tier nickelback for some reason. I hope he can.

Maybe Godfrey prefers playing safety over cb.  He did play it in college.  Also playing corner could lengthen his career. It's the NFL....it's a physical game regardless, but safeties take a bit more punishment compared to a lot positions.

I think Lester and Boston are capable backups, being groomed to start. At Nickel, he can be used to line up against some bigger slower pass catchers, he might be ok in that role. he also could lay some pop on a blitz or 2. My only concern is him lining up against a speed and shifty slot wr, i think that might hurt him. He is pretty fast but i think he will do better in coverage of a bigger slower WR or TE. The thing is we dont know, so we will find out soon.

I think Godfrey will be a very good Nickle back and he will have better coverage and in a larger area than Capt. Also I doubt Capt is really worried because he is getting paid to get burnt in Minny.

Why do people always feel the need to sh*t on former players as soon as they're off the team.

To clarify, the injury comment was related to contract renegotiation being more favorable to the Panthers.  As far as the depth in both positions is concerned, I agree that the question marks are quite high for both.  The only thing I can speculate is that the coaches have evaluated Godfrey's strengths and weaknesses and concluded he has a better shot at contributing to the team as a nickelback rather than a safety.

It will be interesting

    • Yes. Morgan and Canales are too far in to tank. They have to show progression. And to finish 5-12 or 6-11 after starting 4-3 will almost certainly get them fired. Hooker gives you very little chance to win.

    • WR Jonathan Mingo to the Cowboys Dallas Cowboys got: WR Jonathan Mingo, 2025 seventh-round pick Carolina Panthers got: 2025 fourth-round pick Trade date: Nov. 5 Original grade for the Cowboys: D+ New grade for the Cowboys: F Original grade for the Panthers: A New grade for the Panthers: A Sometimes trades seem inexplicable because we don't have all the information (see Johnson, Diontae). But sometimes a team simply made an inexplicable choice. That's the case here. At the time of this deal, the Cowboys were 3-5 and quarterback Dak Prescott had just suffered a hamstring injury that would eventually cost him the rest of the season. That doesn't prevent them from making a deadline deal, but the return should have been great. It wasn't. Mingo's numbers at the time of the trade were rough: 0.8 yards per route run over the first season and a half of his career and, at the time of the deal, an open score that would have ranked 110th out of 111 wide receivers had he played enough to qualify. It turns out those numbers were a sign of what was to come. Mingo managed five receptions for 46 yards ... over eight games with the Cowboys. He has been on injured reserve because of a knee injury and has yet to play this season. There's nothing wrong with taking a swing on a young player who hasn't lived up to his draft stock. It's just that the price was way too high. And that was especially true considering how little the second half of last season meant for Dallas. Carolina deserves credit for recognizing the value of the offer and cutting their losses -- getting a fourth- and seventh-round swap for their 2023 second-round pick was a gift.
