Sean McDermott

Recommended Posts

I was surprised that he didn't get a head coaching job.  What I have always wondered was as a disciple of Jimmy Johnson will he do what he does best. Will he hang around and run a great defense forever or will he jump to be a head coach.  There are some coaches that are better coordinators than head coaches.

I hope he stays a long time with Rivera but I think another top 5 defense and he will be gone.

I think he fielded a horrible defense in Philly and got canned for it and a lot of people are probably wondering how much credit he really deserves for our D considering Rivera has built a top D everywhere he's been.

However, despite coach Andy Reid's statement that McDermott would be retained, it appears that McDermott has been made out to be the scapegoat for much more than the team's defensive shortcomings.

Thrust into this role prior to the 2009 season after the death of Jim Johnson, McDermott has had to do plenty of on the job training over the course of two seasons.  Not to mention, the lack of talent to achieve the level of success that his predecessor accomplished over the course of 10 years.

Just saying.  The talent level of the Eagle's defense has decreased precipitously since the passing of Jim Johnson.  Just like I have given Rivera the benefit of the doubt of a learning curve, I give McDermott that same rope.  He really hasn't disappointed, and has probably excelled under the guidance of Coach Rivera.

McDermott may get a shot in the future (or may not...be taken seriously at least). I know that he isn't averse to a head coaching position, as he interviewed for the Skins before.  One thing about it though: I don't think that we will suffer even if he does leave because of Rivera.

If I remember correctly he was the scapegoat for a ton of injuries.

I do agree that Rivera has his stamp on this defense, but McDermott makes a lot of defensive calls.   To work for Rivera and J. Johnson you would he has developed into a top notched DC.

Oh, he was definitely used as a scapegoat and there were injury issues, but the fact remains that the only non-Rivera associated defense he ever put on the field was downright awful.  I know if I was putting together a short list of potential HC candidates McDermott's name wouldn't be on it.  But, then again neither would Chud's a couple of years ago and he got a gig, short lived as it was.

DCs who work under great defensive minds will always have their own abilities questioned.  The logic is "how much is really them and how much is their mentor"?  Same applies to OCs who work under reputed offensive geniuses.

Fair or not, it happens.

In McDermott's case, he went from working under Jim Johnson to working under Ron Rivera.  While Rivera isn't the legend Johnson was, he's still got a rep as a great defensive coach.  Essentially he's back in a similar spot.

Remember we lost Jack Del Rio one season after the good 2002 defense he had.   I like the Rivera/McDermott connection.  They seem to be on the same page together.

The one thing you cannot over look is that McDermott's defense is built to defeat the tough high powered offenses like the Saints, Falcons and Patriots.  There are going to be owners that will want that for their teams.  You take a defense that started in the 20's and you have them in the top 5 two years running.  You will get serious consideration.

I think in 2014 barring injury we are going to be in top 5 and McDerrmott is gonna get some consideration.

I would like to see him stay and be a Monty Kiffen or Jimmy Johnson and remain a defensive coordinator but who knows.

I do agree with TopDawg if we do lose him, Rivera won't let the defense falter.

The fact that during a interview last year with Sean, Thomas Davis in the back ground shouted that he is the genius behind the defense and he deserves alot of credit.....the fact that TD said that shows to me the players on D play for him and buy into what he does

The good thing is if her were to leave Rivera will get someone in or promote someone to keep things going.

That said it is surprising how many don't give him the credit he deserves.   There was an video I think during the season last year when Rivera was talking about what Sean brings to the table.

If McDermott leaves, it's a safe bet Steve Wilks gets the DC job.

Wilks is who Rivera wanted to begin with but the Chargers denied permission,  We signed him the next year when his contract was up, but McDermott already had the DC job.

That is unless, of course, Steve Wilks takes a job as McDermott's DC.

That is who I think we would make DC.

God forbid he goes with MxDermott and they take Washington too.
