Gunny was hired as a consultant for that movie and performed better than the actor when Kubrick asked what a Drill Instructor would say. Word on the street is that entire scene in the barracks was done in one take.

I've heard that as well. The boot camp part of that movie wasn't originally supposed to play that much of a major role but the material with Ermy was so good, it ended up being half the film.

Didn't he ad lib the entire thing?

They asked Gunny what a Drill Instructor would say and that's what came out. And before you guys think that's what Marine boot camp is it's not. There's actually 3-4 Hartman's running around

Yeah... not so much anymore. I have a nephew who is a Marine Recruiter and he says they've become a kinder, gentler Marine Corps in boot camp. A lot of the stuff in the movie would be considered way over the line now and the 21st century drill instructor has to be more of a leader and teacher than anything.

Um, what? I've always felt that by those men (women included but even our DI's avoided the women DI's) always being perfect gave us something to strive towards. Little did I know they would sometimes change their uniform 3-5 times a day to maintain that perfect look. Or that they really did care if we made good Marines but would never let on we were even worthy to be on the same island as them. I later found out all of ours were going through divorces but we never could tell. I only found out in the fleet.

I went to Parris Island in the summer of 2000. Two of my DIs punched me, they had reason to, one hurled me down the squad bay because I was an idiot, and I know it sounds like a battered spouse but I never blamed them for using those means because it worked. They didn't do it because they were sadists it was like a surgeon making one tiny cut to fix things. Because once I stopped screwing up they stopped putting their hands on me.

That really breaks my heart because that's one of the best times of my life was on the island. And I really should have soaked up every bit of it because I didn't know what I had then.
