He will certainly be missed on the pitch for the Mannschaft. Seems a tad young to retire from National Team play especially when you factor in how skilled he still is. I thought for sure he would play in one more World Cup alongside Schweini and Podolski and would have at least stuck around for the Euros. At least he went out on top!

There is really no better way to go out. Great player and great skipper. I think he leaves the side in a good place. A lot of young guys ready to take over.

If I was him, I'd retire too. Those international dates become mini vacations for him. It could help him maintain a high level of form in club ball. And lets be honest, if the Germans qualify for the Euros without him, he can always come back if their RB position is a mess.
