Might have been able to improve that secondary quite a bit with that $13M though. Or how about the OL? Or the WR corps?

I just don't see the end game of franchising Hardy if he's not in the long-term plans.

True DEs are rare and much more valuable than a db (barring the elite dbs we never had a chance af)

There was no way in hell Gettleman was gonna give Hardy a long-term deal after Ealy fell into his lap in the draft.

Why pay Hardy now? See what you have in Ealy and make Hardy prove he can do it again this year. If he has another great year, he will get a long-term deal in Carolina. Then as long as Ealy plays well they will move the older Johnson. If he struggles or plays lazy, and Ealy shows potential, they will get rid of Hardy.

Common sense, people. There's no reason to sign him now. Make him earn his money. Just because Dave isn't throwing money at him now doesn't mean he's only here this season. More than likely Ealy/Hardy will be the DEs moving forward unless Johnson takes a massive pay cut, which I don't see happening. They don't call him Big Money for nothing.

 

Exactly.  If things work out, Ealy excels, giving us options, bottom line.  This includes parting ways with CJ to get cap space if we are looking to sign Kraken long term.  You gotta love what CJ still brings though.  Even if he wasn't a Panther he'd probably be one of my fave DEs in the league.    Also, we've got a great depth player in Addison.  Love what he brings.

See how he responds to expectations under the tag, our front 7 stay dominant while we continue fix the secondary, Ealy and company soak in the experience behind two great DEs and we re-evaluate after the season. 

 

I want to believe his legal troubles have less to do with his future than his overall character.

Gettleman follow the model that uses free agency for hole plugging, not long-term solutions.  And to be clear, that's a model followed by a lot of successful teams.

 

Before he went hogwild and started handing out money like a dying philanthropist, Marty Hurney tried to do that too.  But the model falls apart quickly if you don't draft well, and Hurney generally didn't past round one.  Gettleman's drafts will determine whether he can succeed where Hurney failed.

 

Honestly sometimes I'm not sure people really heard what Gettleman was saying when he mentioned "long term thinking" (despite the fact he's said so numerous times) but he's staying true to that idea.

what's gonna be tricky though is what happens next offseason. lots of big, big decisions in personnel that will have immediate and long term ramifications on the team. seemingly in a bigger way than most offseasons.

To me it all depends on how a few guys play. DWill and Stewy, Bell and Chandler, DeCoud and Harper, and White and Lester, and even Norman, If these guys play well it helps us long term. We won't have to retool again, which limits the work Gman has to do. He could then concentrate on the big 4. CJ, Kraken, Cam, and Keek.

If things go well, Gman will be in a good spot. He can decide what he really needs to do as apposed to what he has to do. Especially the RB corp. If they play well then keeping them around makes sense. If they falter, it puts added pressure to find some cap relief.

All in all, I think we are in good shape. But yeah, it is still going to be interesting to see how this all plays out.

 

 

I don't think after this latest episode (no matter how it turns out), he is any longer in the Panthers long term plans.Between his pin head agent playing hardball and this crap...he be gone in 2015.Kony may get a lot more snaps then expected and maybe F.A. gets one more shot (if he isn't cut and gets out the dog house). Read the tea leaves...D.G has a plan and it doesn't include #76.They will re-structure C.J next year and life will go on.

IF, they decide to keep CJ, it would make more sense to extend him and not restructure. The only way we restructure him is if they plan on him playing 1 or maybe 2 more years. If they want him here long term. They need to extend him.

Other than that, you post is just dripping with speculation. Nothing wrong with that. As long as you don't take yourself too serially.

CJ going to benefit. I assumed DG franchised Hardy to buy a year to figure out which of these guys to roll with in the future. I would have gone Hardy and find a way to cut ties with big money in the next year or two. Can't pay them both. Now I can't imagine the panthers signing Hardy long term. But he may play himself back into it.

should have cut him along with the first batch.... they truthfully had intentions otherwise they would have done so. so we have liars! nevertheless he has been a risky player and quite foolish at times. we could have done much more in FA or trades by not giving him that tag.... and now they won't eat crow for nothing! he's out next season if not a desperate trade first. oh and get that Andre Johnson talk out of here too. foolish move by hardy and the f.o.

      Not sure if anyone else is watching this D1-AA championship game but I don't know if these receivers have NFL athleticism but they got HANDS. These boys can flat out CATCH. This is a good football game.

      People on here are wrong all the time. I mean some of our best draft picks people didn't like initially due to various reasons. On the other hand there have been a multitude of decisions made by people who are paid very well to know what they're doing that some Panthers fans here saw as a mistake a mile away. Well look man let's put all the chips on the table. Because your grievance is particularly about the QB position. The Panthers have had only two long term starting franchise QB's in 30 years. Thirty years. Two. This fanbase has seen a hell of a lot of poor to mediocre QB play and even short lived fairy tales like the Kyle Allen win streak or going back even further Matt Moore. As far as Darnold and Mayfield goes I think they are certainly overachieving but I don't think anyone here that was critical of either of them were wrong. They both had a heaping portion of humble pie here that has served them greatly now. Mayfield in particular because when he first got here he was still a cocky idiot. Darnold at least kept his head down and did his job for the most part. But I have a hard time seeing either of them going far in the playoffs because in the midst of some of their best games I've seen the same flawed QB's. Darnold is no Nick Foles let's be real with one another here. Baker specifically looked like hot garbage against our defense in Charlotte recently. And those best teams in the playoffs have all that on film and damn well know about it too if average fans like us can see it.
