This reminds me of a time my dad and I were doing some irrigation work in the backyard and we dug up a hornets nest.  I didn't realize until I started getting stung...a lot.  Good times.

build a wood fire on top of the nest if you can, and then have fun watching them try to attack the fire

fill a cardboard box of any size with wood and yard waste and newspaper.  set it on top of the nest.  set it on fire and stand back and watch the fun.

They can burrow out of the foam. They may suffocate first though. These guys are relentless I have seen them eat through bricks of a house to get in. No joke.

used this last week and it seems to have done the job well... after both my dogs got stung and i got stung while weed whacking, i figured it was time they found somewhere else to live.

their nest was underground and i'm still not sure where, so i doused a pretty large portion of the ground i thought they were. they'll apparently re-enter the nest after being sprayed and spread it to the nest as well. they've not been swarming in that area since and i've seen a few checking out new places to set up shop
