Ian Rappaport:J.Graham appeals decision

Any cap bump is also just carte blanche for players to ask for more money or to get it from someone else.  Right now the supposed cap bump next year to 140 million still won't cover the 141 the saints already have committed not including Graham. their rookies and any free agents.  They also have little to no carryover money due to being so close to the cap this year.

Projected cap in '16 is $150 million. I know you say we shouldn't, but I have a feeling some of that dough is coming from there anyways. I mean, it's there for a reason.

Still, we may have to make some tough decisions, like cutting a 40 year old kicker or not resigning Mark Ingram.

I honestly think it's more about Loomis and Payton knowing that franchise QBs are hard to come by and there's no guarantee they'll have one when Brees hangs them up.  In fact, other than Young taking over from Montana and Rodgers taking over from Favre, it's hard to think of teams that have kept it rolling after a true franchise QB retires.  Most teams hit a rut.  Loomis and Payton are going all in trying to capitalize on Brees' final years. Honestly, it's probably the smart move.  Probably going to lead to some painful years after he retires, but those painful years were probably gonna happen anyway.

But Byrd signed a deal for 9 million a year, so is it really such a big deal for his cap hit to be 10 million a couple of years instead of 9? And for the record, the last two years of his deal have hardly any guaranteed money and large roster bonuses, meaning he'll either be worth it and stay around or he won't an he'll be cut.

The question was whether the Saints have backloaded contracts and I showed where Byrd's went from 3 million this year to 10 million next year which is the definition of backloading.

As for dead cap space- Byrd would cost 15 million in 2015, almost 7 million in 2016, and 4.4 million in 2017.  So he is there until at least 2017 whether he plays well or not.  That is of course unless the Saints start restructuring him and the dead cap hit goes even higher.

Did you forget about Indy?  Truth is that few teams actually have a true franchise quarterback let alone have had back to back ones.

I think you are right about Loomis and payton gambling now to try to make one last run before the window closes. But the bitch will be when they don't win another lombardi with brees and still suck for years.

I brought up his contract because I don't believe it's a backloaded contract. A jump between the first and second year is considered back loading? In my opinion, no. But obviously yours is different. The jump is only 1 million above what his annual salary is. Not a bad team contract at all IMO.

I know he's there until at least 2017, that's why I brought up the last 2 years of the contract lol.

Payton's record on the road is actually quite good.

He was quite stupid in the game he played here last year.

Edit: Perhaps instead of stupid I should say his massive ego got the best of him.

The problem with pushing out money is that you increase the dead cap money and if players get hurt you or struggle you can get rid of them.  So far you guys have been pretty lucky but look at what happened to us with Beason.  He was in his prime and got injured and had a huge dead cap hit.

The decisions will be more like take a hit of Colston for 10.5 million or take a dead cap hit of 2.7 million if you cut or trade him.  Or take a cap hit of Lofton for  7.5 million or take a dead cap hit of 3 million. You either pay 18 million to keep them or give 6 million away in dead cap space to cut them.

The weather was quite stupid in the game there last year lol. Hell of a game though. Watched it with my Panther fan mother. Talk about depressing.

Yes I was at the game. The weather was bad for both teams, not just the Saints. And the bad weather that a lot of Saints fans point to was only during a portion of Q3. It was a joyous day.

Lofton and Hawthorne will both likely be gone. Colston, I can see getting an extension at a lower salary.

I did forget about Indy.  I guess I wasn't thinking about them because they obviously tanked that season to get Luck where as the 49ers and Packers legitimately planned ahead in replacing their guys.
