Hornets salary cap situation

Omega Atrocity

Wanted to ask. Do we still own Tolliver's, CDR's, and Pargo's rights as well?

No to all of them. To own bird rights the player has to be under contract with you for 2 years consecutively (not necessarily the same contract) OR they transfer from an old team with a trade (hence why we have Ridnour's, he signed a 4 year deal back in 2010).

Just ran a few numbers and assuming Al gets a salary increase in the $18 mil range and Kemba gets an extension in the $8.5 mil range.

We will have no space next year.

The MLE will be our only option...

Just running a mock roster for 2015...

PG: Walker, Back-Up Signed This Year, Third String Vet

SG: Henderson, Hairston

SF: MKG, Taylor, Draft Pick

PF: Williams, Zeller, Vonleh

C: Jefferson, MLE

Then the other two spots might be filled by summer league guys. Our cap space situation for the next two years took a hit with that Williams deal.

Taylor would also have to be extended next year or we would have to use the MLE or bi-annual on a backup SF.

I'm a little confused.  In the trade we owed Haywood 2 million.  We got a unguaranteed contract of 2.4 million and some undisclosed cash.

So we actually opened up I guess 2.4 million with the trade.

The undisclosed cash though, how does that work?  Is that added to cap room as in Cleveland pays for a bit of a future contract?  Or does Michael just pocket that and take it to gamble at the golf course?

I am obviously a dolt about some of the weird contract rules in the NBA

That's the weird thing about cash in trades, it's just pocketed by the organization, they can use it for whatever. It doesn't free up any cap room.

I'd be interested in using the MLE on Samuel Dalembert next year.

I know this is a long way away, but I like these scenarios.

Just a mock 2015 roster

PG; Kemba Walker, Kirk Hinrich (sign this year), Oliver Hanlan (draft next year)

SG: Gerald Henderson, P.J. Hairston, Jabari Bird (draft next year)

SF: Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Travis Outlaw (bi-annual), Jeff Taylor, Josh Davis (sign this year)

PF: Marvin Williams, Cody Zeller, Noah Vonleh

C: Al Jefferson, Samuel Dalembert (MLE)

Not awful for no cap space.

Not sure I would pay to keep that group together, different players and same result as last Charlotte NBA playoff team. 7/8 seed max in a weak eastern conference.

At least it gives MKG, Zeller, PJ and Vonleh time to improve on the bench for a season or two and then become the core of the team going forward.

What group are you talking about?

- Unless there is a trade Henderson, Hairston, MKG, Williams, Zeller, and Vonleh will be on the team.

- Our back-up point guard that we sign this year will most likely be in the roster

- Jefferson will most definitely be on the roster and will probably get a substantial raise.

The only you open up cap space is if you let Kemba walk. If we let Kemba, Biyombo, and Neal hit the market, there is a chance we could have around $15 mil in cap space with a huge hole at point guard. So essentially you are replacing Kemba with someone like Dragic then once again using the MLE and bi-annual to fill out the roster.

I'm talking about the core in place, being capped at a 7/8 seed in the east. MJ's whole point of blowing up the roster back in 2010 because the team was capped with no way to improve the team in a major way. Back to the same spot now after the Williams deal. That's all I was getting at.
