Hornets Sign Marvin Williams

Recommended Posts

It feels like if they wanted Lance, they'd have him already. He's just been hanging out there and the Hornets - according to most all sources - haven't made a hard move to get him. Maybe they're trying to wait it out and hope he signs for less money when he sees the what the market is offering. But just from their actions so far this offseason, it looks like Hayward was "their guy." They wined and dined him, then offered him a massive contract they were hoping the Jazz wouldn't match since the Jazz wouldn't pay him that much during their previous negotiations. It didn't work. I'm sure they're disappointed.

As for Williams, it is what it is. Yes, we could've had McRoberts for cheaper and he'd already know the system, Clifford likes him, and he'd be a good mentor for Vonleh. But at the time, maybe Cho didn't feel like he was worth that type of money. And now as the good players are getting gobbled up, Williams is pretty definitively the best 4 available. Vonleh most definitely isn't ready to step into a starter's role, so they needed a vet to step in and basically fill that spot until Vonleh IS ready. As someone already posted, Williams and McRoberts are very similar, with Williams being a slightly better scorer and defender, and McRoberts being a better passer. So it's pretty much a wash. It's not a great signing, it's not a terrible signing, it's what we had to do in the situation because we're running out of options.

Agreed with what you said but tying up the cap for next season with 7 million is what makes it a questionable signing. I would rather have the cap space next season bc Marvin Williams is the type of player a lot of mid level guys are like.

There have been 3 media entities (2 which are reputable, one not as much) citing sources saying we are pursuing Lance Stephenson and/or have been talking to his agent.

Bonnell cites no sources and everyone considers the case closed.

Just saying.  We will figure out a way to get it done if we have a chance.

My perspective as well.

I didn't want Lance at the start of FA, but his versatility is much needed...  I hope we can pull it off.

I am going to throw it out there.  Offer Stephenson a 4 year 46 million (@11.25 per year) and use the MLE on a point guard.

Free agency over.

Use bird rights on some guys next year, let some walk, make some trades to clear other cap space

We will not have any money next year.

Zeller's, MKG's, Vonleh's, and Hairston's contracts will all escalate on the rookie scale. Totaling up to $15 mil

Jefferson is going to get a huge extension. Maybe up to $18 mil per season. Kemba is going to get at least $8.5 mil per year. Taylor will also probably get $2 mil a year. Totaling up to $28 mil

Williams and Henderson will count for $13 mil.

Assuming we sign a good back up point guard this year, there goes another $5 mil.

Now factor in another million for our draft pick.

We may have $2 mil in space by the time free agency rolls around.

We will be using the MLE and bi-annual to fill out the roster next year. Not a max contract.

Kemba at 8.5 sounds ludicrous but given the contracts being handed out this offseason, I guess that's what it is going to take.

With that said, a much better Isaiah Thomas just got a 4 year, 28 million dollar deal as an RFA.  That should be the ceiling for Kemba.

You mind sharing the report?

Meh.  I don't know about this guy, but sure.  His timeline didn't look outrageously throwing too much poo against the wall (at least no more than anyone else).

He has only been doing this since February and only has about 300 followers

Point being, I don't know anything about this guy, he is new, but his timeline didn't seem to show he was just trolling

NBA infos @nbainfos Follow

The Charlotte #Hornets have called Lance Stephenson's agent for a deal source tell #NBAFreeAgency

I try not to post poo unless it is pretty reputable.  That is why I only posted the Sporting News story and the one form the newspaper in Syracuse and not this one

Isaiah Thomas is so good that Horrible Sacramento wanted him gone because they didn't want him as the starter and in Phoenix he's a bench player only. Kemba hate = ridiculous on this board.

Interesting info about the money being tied up next year. Sucks but who knows what might happen and where the cap will be next year.

Also who knows but Henderson has a player option next year so who knows if he opts out looking for a longer contract.

We also don't know if Big Al will opt out or not. So there are a lot of things that can happen from this yr to next.

Oh, I agree he's overpaid.  But if we lowballed him and he went somewhere else, we'd be really hurting for a decent vet 4.  Just looking at CBS' free agent tracker right now, you're talking about a drop down to guys like Al-Farouq Aminu (who's more of a 3), Kris Humphries, and Jason Smith.
