More likely scenario:

Steve Smith comes down with a mysterious illness while in Baltimore. No one on the Ravens staff knows where he has gone, they assume he went to South America for radical experimental treatment.

Meanwhile, in the Queen City, there have been reports of a 5'7 and a half man with a strange mustache and black rimmed eye glasses around town. He goes by the name Cleve Blith. Just so happens the Panthers give a pseudo-tryout to said "Mr. Blith" and they sign him to the practice squad, and then bring him to the regular roster.

Long story short, Clive Blith films an intro on the new jumbo jumbo screens where he pulls off the glasses and fake mustache and is revealed to be...Steve Smith!!

Crowd goes ape poo. Smith goes on to have 9 catches for 112 yards in the season and Panthers win the Superbowl by 55 points.
