Where are the action movies?

I'd agree with the notion that there are no Schwarzanegger / Stallone / Norris personas around these days.

When I saw The Rundown, I thought The Rock would be that guy (there was even a tip of the hat from Schwarzanegger early in the film) but it hasn't happened.  The others who arguably had the best chance, guys like Statham and Diesel, have just tended to make bad choices.

Tatum?  Just not seeing it.  Thought maybe Bradley Cooper would be big too but he's not it.  You could make an argument the best 'action star' right now is Liam Neeson, but he's up there in age.

Maybe 'that guy' is out there, but he hasn't been discovered yet.  For right now though, I'd probably rather watch an old Jackie Chan than most of today's young crop.

Genres and subgenres come and go in popularity. What happened to westerns? What about high school comedy craze of the 80s and 90s? Slasher films in the 80s? Examples of all of these still exist today, but they aren't as prevalent. I think that what y'all are defining as "action" was really just another subgenre that came and went in the 80s and 90s - guys with big muscles blow things up and beat people up. We still have action now. It's just repackaged as thrillers/suspense, spy films (a genre that in theory should have died or evolved but somehow remains the same), comic-based movies, etc. Those comic-based movies are certainly the "it" action subgenre for the 2000s and 2010s.

Its not cool to be macho or tough. Emaciated males are cool. In films that is. I kinda kid.

I like going to box office mojo and look at the top 20 grossing films of a year. Kind of gives an idea of the psyche at the time and then look year over year.

It seems like it.

This thought started when someone asked me what I thought the best action movies of all time were.  And then I realized pretty much all the non-comicbook flicks that popped into my brain - stuff like Speed, The Rock, Face Off, True Lies, etc - was all like ten to twenty years old.

What's the most recent action movie you'd put on that list?
