Well well well..

Master Gunnery Corporal Third Class

Yup.  My radar was tingling bad as soon as I saw his photo.

In other news, apparently my tweets outing this guy have made ESPN, Washington Post, and Charlotte Observer.

I am a Marine and proud of it. No Marine ever, unless on Duty will wear a cover indoors. Marine will wear Dress Blues during travel, but it will be Dress Blue Bravo (Ribbons and Rifle badges), Wearing of medals are only for special occasions.

Old and Crusty Marines all remember how to wear their medals and ribbons, If they dont remember, they will most likely ask other Marines or not wear the uniform at all

So here's my faith in humanity meter on this.

DWill giving up his seat to who he believes is a service member: +5

Dude faking military service: -7

Internet restorative justice: +3

I'm going to chalk this one up as a win.

Unfortunately it appears the guy isn't really a Marine... wearing his cover indoors, medals displayed incorrectly, etc... read the comments in the FB post.

DeAngelo had no way of knowing, still a good deed!

Just looking at the picture (as a Marine), I can't see anything off with the medals...  This is a Dress Blue Alpha (medals instead of ribbons) which calls for ribbons that have no associated medal to be displayed on the right (and rifle/pistol qual badges as well, if memory serves?)...

Now, as to why he's wearing a cover indoor...  I'd say that a Master Gunnery Sgt or Sgt Major (can't quite tell which he is), with what looks to be 30+ years of service can wear his cover anywhere he damn well pleases...  lol

Maybe he's legit, maybe he's not, but at a glance he passes the eyeball test to me..  =)

The only photo I see is poor quality but it appears to be an older guy in the uniform - of retired age. Maybe he dressed up for the 4th to go to a reunion or something - old vets rarely remember all the rules of where what medal goes - it was a bitch remembering when on active duty for me and I had few to display.

This. I was in the Marines for 9 years and have been out for 8. This got me thinking and I honestly had to look at my DD-214 to ensure I remembered all the metals I rated and would look to make sure I had the correct order. That being said, I would know to look. The second metal does appear to be a silver star. I can't tell what the one in front of it is, but there are none that should be in front of it that look anything like that. The cover indoors thing is weird, but I don't doubt he'd put it on if he was asked for a photo. If he is a Marine he probably has sea bags older than me so he might have lost a little bit upstairs. If he's not, it sucks that people do stuff like that, but shouldn't be the focus of the story.

i was just about to post this.

the extent of my USMC experience was OSO exercises and OCS in the summer before i blew my knees out, but in that limited time i learned enough that my radar went off on this one. no way that dude is legit, especially if the reports from the philippines are right.

i had a guy come down into the club i worked at a few years ago in dress blues, cover on, fat old motherfuger with fuging lieutenant colonel pinned on. surrounded instantly by fat 40-year-olds, which was exactly what he was after… pathetic.

Just an FYI, I've personally had my medals wrong before due to the fact I had them right and someone corrected me and I assumed they knew what they were talking about. It's easy to mess up medals.

Also, I always put my cover on for a photo, even if it's indoors.

I don't want to be a dick because this board isn't the place for this BUT......

if you are active, that type of stuff shouldn't be happening.

EDIT: Please remember, this is coming from a Marine.  Other's maybe more lax in uniform regulations.   Attention to detail, especially uniform is one of the first items stressed in Boot Camp / OCS.
