D.Williams...props to a good guy...on and off the field

He is an old marine that has seen combat.  The medals and cover worn indoors is irrelevant.  I attend all of the VFW meetings monthly and often the older vets will don their uniforms and display things incorrectly and wear the cover inside.  They are a proud bunch.  It looks as thought this particular vet was from the Vietnam era.   This man was simply full of pride.

Doubtful.  They may do that at VFW meetings among other veterans.

A retired SgtMaj or MGySgt wouldn't wear a jacked up uniform in public like that.  I don't care how old they are.  I've been around plenty of old salty retired Korean era/Vietnam era Marines, they have more pride in having a squared away uniform than most of the young Marines now.

If he served in combat, where is his Combat Action Ribbon?

Look, i'm not out to bust old vets balls for wearing a uniform wrong.

But this guy is so fuged up, there is just no way he is a Marine.  Especially a retired fuging E-9.

Maybe this marine does not posses the ability to have his uniform squared away.  I've seen salty Korean vets with their shirts not tucked in or the tubes from the colostomy bag in clear view.  It's relative to the person.  I am a proud veteran, I wore my uniform on the 4th,  I cannot bend down and tie my own shoes at times so there may be debris and clutter on my dress shoes, it doesn't make me less of a veteran.  Every person has his own story and I will not assume this old Marine is being fraudulent.

That's your opinion.  One Marine saw him in the airport in the Philippines earlier in the week and questioned him.  The guy was totally full of poo.

That guy was certainly not a Marine.  I'm a Marine Captain.  I was the one that pointed it out in the first place.

Problem 1:Cover on indoors.

Problem 2: Wearing Dress Alphas unauthorized.  (only authorized for sanctioned Marine Corps functions, i.e Marine Corps Ball or Mess Night, a wedding if you get the Commanding General's approval)

Problem 3: Wearing shooting badges with his medals.  A Marine of that rank, E-9, WOULD NEVER DO THIS.

Problem 4: He has a Bronze Star, Purple Heart but does NOT have a Combat Action Ribbon.  That is actually impossible to receive a wound in combat and the Nation's 3rd Highest Award for military valor without also receiving a CAR.

Problem 5: He only has 2 Good Conduct Medals.  Any E-9 would have WAY more than 2.

There is a 0% chance this guy is a Marine or ever was.

Captain Amos,

Problem 1 can be debated given who would tell a 75 year old veteran with that many rockers to take his cover off. In addition, Drills Instructors, Recruits, Silent Drill Platoon and even commanding officers wear their covers indoors for specific functions. Is he wrong to wear it indoors? Yes. Does it still happen? Absolutely. I'm certain no one would tell these two Brigadier Generals to take their covers off or accuse them of being fakers.

Problem 2 - MCO P1020.3G allows the wear of uniforms for Veterans. They are limited to Military funerals, memorial services, weddings, inaugurals and ceremonies. No one here can say that they know where he was going.

Problem 3 - Again, he is of a different era. Older generation Marines are proud and do not care for today's regulations. If I asked my grandpa to take off his shooting badges he would slap me on my mouth.

Problem 4 - The photo is too blurry to actually see the all of his medals.Who knows if he mounted them in the correct sequence.

Problem 5 - Again the photo is too blurry to make that call.

I think that he should be given the benefit of the doubt and not rush to judgment.

Maybe so.  My gut tells me differently.  The other poster's story backed up my instinct.

Regardless, I'm not the one that saw him and I'm not planning on contacting law enforcement.

I see it all to often.  I'm sure you do too.  It has certainly made me cynical.

I am not in the Marines, but I am a military member.

I could see it being an old crsty guy not giving a fug, but harder to believe based on his rank if thats what he was when he retired.

Could he possibly be wearing the uniform in honor of someone else? Brother, cousin, etc?

Or could he possibly be an actor of some sort, seeing as it was 4th of July weekend?
