Advice needed: Jammed Fingers

I play Basketball in the mornings before work with a couple guys at the gym maybe 2-3x a week. More of a cool down but we do get into it sometimes on Fridays. Anyways, I have jammed my fingers multiple time, twice within the past week of playing.

Wednesday last week- First was my right pointer finger, kept playing, then jammed my left ring finger. Finished playing and treated them with ice and finger braces. Since then my ring finger is good, but my pointer finger is still touchy. This morning I played gingerly. Not playing super hard but just okay. Thats when i jammed my left pointer finger FUUUAAACCKK. The pointer fingers are the worst!

So what the hell do i do. I know how to treet them, ice and finger braces/wraps. But how do i prevent them? Im thinking about getting the medical tape to tape my pointer/middle fingers together before i play and maybe. Any help?

PS. please dont be the jerk that responds with "stop playing bball is a start"

Jammed fingers are just a part of basketball, but to have as many as you did is out of the ordinary.

I play once a week and might jam my finger twice a year.

Maybe you had a run of bad luck... maybe tone done your style of play?  That's a lot of jammed fingers.

I will say that I jammed my index finger playing football in 11/2012.  I didn't let it heal properly (playing guitar using it, playing basketball) and it still gives me problems.  Probably will for the rest of my life.  Don't do that. Let them heal.

are you jamming them on the rim trying to dunk?

are you jamming them trying to block shots?

those are the only times I typically would jam them...not sure how much taping them will help and I'm sure it will make shooting really weird but might be worth a try.

oh....or you could try just quitting basketball!  your fault...you tempted me.

Those things are a pain. I jammed one bad in the summer before my senior year in high school and it bugged me my entire senior year, probably because I never went more than two days without playing so it never got time to heal.

One thing you can do once you do get them healed is to get your hands stronger to help prevent them. Do fingertip pushups or basketball pushups. Definitely helps.

I grew up in a neighborhood where all we ever did was play street ball. I constantly jammed my ring and middle fingers. The only thing you can do is apply ice and heat while resting them. I'm only 20 and I have super fuged up finger joints and wrists from dunking or jamming fingers. My wrists make clicking sounds when I rotate them, basketball is so rough on the hands and arms.

Try and get some faster hands.

I jammed my right pointer finger playing football. Went to doctor and I had a fracture right near joint. Hurt like a bitch for 3-4 weeks. Doctor told me to take 600mg ibuprofen and wear splinter for 2-3 weeks

Took me 6 years to fully bend tip of my finger again.

Playing baseball my entire life I got many of these. Also broken fingers.

All you can really do is ice the poo out of them multiple times a day so the swelling goes down. It's a bitch and really painful but it's better than the alternative of not playing the sport

SportandHealth in Brambleton, VA

I think I jammed them all going for rebounds or loose balls.. no dunking, i wish..

if i did i would be coming on here to brag i jammed my finger dunking the ball, lol

i think i need to just 'mindfully' spread my hands wide open when going for the ball, or use a finger sleeve/brace
