Another thing about the US and soccer. We have 4 major sports. Europe has 1. Soccer just can't compete.

Also, don't really care to read about the rules, or how they seem to keep time. It doesn't add to the fact that the game is boring. Nuances or not. There just aren't enough exciting plays to justify 90+ minutes.

In a normal game you get what, 10 shots. Ooh. Such excitement can't be good for people. I mean, 0-0 after 90+ minutes. Wow, that's entertainment.

I just don't get it. Maybe in Europe where they have nothing else it may make sense. But here in the ol' US of A, we like our sports to be exciting. And soccer just doesn't fit the bill.

That's just not true. Europe has loads of sports that cover a majority of their time. Rugby is huge (especially in Wales), cricket is still a widely played sport, and baseball is continuing to grow in countries like Greece.

Just because you find something boring doesn't make it so. In fact, the majority of the world disagrees with you. Soccer is a beautiful game to watch. To me, it's just as exciting as American football, just in a different way.

Soccer is actually very inexpensive to play, this the reason most all countries, regardless of money, play soccer. All you need is something kinda round and something to kick it at. That's it.

Organized soccer is a tad more expensive. The fields are large and need to be well-maintained.

By football I meant American football, not soccer. Our brand of football is far too expensive for other countries to play.

Ah, sorry. Yeah, you're absolutely right. Our football requires so much to play, and on top of that, parents are becoming more and more of afraid of early injuries their kids are going to be subject to. There is some fear, based on reports that I've read, that our brand of football may be in danger because of that.

This is the perfect time for soccer to pick up and become a dominant sport.

Soccer is very exciting if you really care about the outcome of the game. You might find a low scoring game to be boring but if you think about the suspense it builds you can appreciate the game. Most times both teams are in the game until the end.   You know someone is going to score but you don't know who will make a mistake or who will make a fantastic play. Each time the opponent rushes down the field to overwhelm your defenders with a few deft passes only to be repelled by a fantastic play by an inspired goalie is as suspenseful as a football drive which is stalled by a great defensive play.  A forward making a run down the middle evading 3 defenders on his way to a big goal in the upper 90 is just as exciting as a long bomb pass for a score.

But it is very different from our sports. There are 2 competitions going on.  One on the field and one in the stands.  It isn't just the game but the cheering and back and forth that changes in a flash when one teams strikes for a sudden goal.  One side erupts while the other dies a little as the momentum swings back and forth.  Look at how many games are being decided in extra time or penalty kicks in the world cup. Watching a soccer game is like watching an alfred hitchcock movie. Everything starts out slow but the suspense builds as you wait for something either great or terrifying to happen.  You think you have it won only to get tied up in the last minute of extra time like against Portugal.   Not much differnt from losing a game on a 2 minute drive.

The real issue is whether you are totally into the outcome or you are just watching a game between teams you have no stake in.  Anyone who is a big fan of a particular team can get excited when their team plays but only real soccer fans like watching any team play to see how talented the players are as they show off their sleight of leg tricks.

You have always struck me as a pretty optimistic kind of guy who is open minded.  I would have thought you could appreciate soccer.  I can love many sports and appreciate what each brings to the table. I figured you would too.

Well...when you put it like that.

I was just busting some ballz. Having a little fun so to speak. I actually watched the game against, hell, I forgot. And will admit there was a few moments there that were actually pretty exciting. But I won't be watching any more soccer. Cuz as a whole it wasn't that exciting.

I get that people, lots of people, love their soccer. All the power to them. For me, not so much. Just not enough action. To much flopping. Not enough scoring. But Howard was pretty great.

Would like to add that I do believe that when the kids who are playing now grow up. Soccer will probably be pretty damm popular. But...I don't see it ever challenging Football, Basketball, or even Baseball for superiority.

And you need less equipment to play football than soccer. You don't need a goal to play football. Baseball all you need is a stick and some sort of ball. So anyone can play these games for cheap as well.

Also, how does injury time that is added, always seem to add up to exactly 3 minutes?

Um, all you need for soccer is a ball. You don't need a goal. You can kick the ball into a trash can, or between two sticks, it doesn't matter. All you need is a ball.

Oopsy. I guess that thought never occurred to me.

I just thought soccer players liked kicking it into a goal. Otherwise how can you say "Gooooooaaaaaalllllll"?
