How did we lose this much money

It make a lot more sense if the 3.5 million is just what the NBA charged for the name change. I knew the Bobcats had turned a profit the year before which had me confused since they we selling shirts and selling tickets at a pretty good pace last year compared to years past. I can easily understand the lose with all the upgrades and changes they have to go through.

The team sucked for a long time, nobody went to games, the t.v. deal is bad, they had to eat all the bobcats merchandise, and sponsors didn't care about the Bobcats last season.

Despite all of that, more than a quarter of the loss was from the name change fee. Honestly, after seeing that, I am convinced that it is almost impossible for an NBA team to lose money for multiple years in a row. I can't think any fanbase in the NBA could be less motivated than the Bobcats were, and they still nearly broke even after all those one time expenses.

Things should be good from here on out..but still do not get them On TV legally in Columbia, SC and thats a alot of kids not growing up with that brand..untapped in the lesser Carolina.

Yeah I'm from Columbia myself.  There's a lot of good and bad things to say about that town....but one thing I know for sure is it's a great sports town.

It's weird that all the pro sports in the Carolinas seem to ignore tapping into the Columbia market despite it's size and proximity to Charlotte.   Makes no sense.

Go Gamecocks.

I'm pretty sure even Raleigh has trouble getting games?

Everyone in both Carolinas should be able to broadcast the game.  In the 90's, people drove like 3-4 hours to watch a Hornets game.  I know when I was a youngster my rec league basketball team took a bus down to CLT to watch a Hornets game.

Thats only the fee to the NBA to change the name, but I would assume there are a lot of other costs involved with the re-branding effort.  Designing new logos, jerseys, court, arena, producing new merchandise (while writing off all the old bobcat stuff), marketing the name change.

Plus you have a team with very little local support (coming off 2-3 very bad seasons), that just increased payroll significantly with the Jefferson signing and the Tyrus Thomas amnesty (that dude is still getting checks though he doesnt count towards our cap number).

Next season should see a lot of this investment pay off though, the team on the court should keep improving and capitalize on the local interest from the name change.  A winning team and interested fans means a lot more leverage for a better local TV deal

Yeah there are a ton of hidden logistics cost involved with that name change.  Last year was an investment year for the franchise and can't really be held against us in terms what we can expect year to year.  I can only imagine how much we would have lost if we would have stayed the Bobcats.

The current TV deal with fox sports allows for distribution in both Carolina's, the problem is the NBA considers all areas 80 miles from TWCA out of market & the cost is prohibitive for many cable outlets when you factor in the average ratings per broadcasts

Ah

I hate pro sports blackout rules and stuff.  If you guy NBA.tv or MLB.tv you should get EVERYTHING for that much.  Especially since MLB for instance, it counts teams in like Baltimore and Cinci as blackout games, like I'm going to drive 8 hours to watch.  So they lose out on my 100 some bucks.

Whoever said TV deal, bingo. That's where teams make their money. TV deal, and in turn advertisements. Also not like the arena was packed last year.

I'd expect all of these to go up now that A. The team is better and more promising, B. The Hornets are back.
