Best Cam Newton Article of the offseason?

Recommended Posts

Franchise quarterbacks make their teammates better. They paper over cracks in the roster. They turn losses into wins with great games, or even one great play at just the right time. Cam Newton is not always that guy, not quite yet.

The Panthers are going to have a very tough road back to the divisional round of the NFC playoffs. The NFC South figures, once again, to be one of the strongest divisions in football—and if the Panthers improved, they improved less than any of the other three teams in their division.

Great, but when it says, "Franchise quarterbacks make their teammates better. They paper over cracks in the roster. They turn losses into wins with great games, or even one great play at just the right time. Cam Newton is not always that guy, not quite yet." it really bothers me. Cam WAS ALWAYS that guy last season except for the first two games, but even that's arguable since our defense screwed us against the Bills and DeAngelo screwed us against the Seahawks. Cam I believe has gotten to the point where he can be the reason we win close games and even match ups. The Patriots game, Saints game, Miami game, Falcons game, etc  are all perfect examples of that. We beat the elite Patriots on monday night football after they had a bye (basically a guaranteed win for the Pats in the past 10 years) and it was all due to Cam. Our defense was great until Johnson went out but after that we got killed by Brady. Cam kept us in the game and got us the clutch win. Even when our receivers couldn't get open and our line couldn't block for him, as shown by his scramble that you all know about. Saints game, with Donald as our #1 receiver and Hixon as our #2 with Ginn in the slot, was all Cam. Yes our defense played well but Cam got us the win. In Miami Smitty helped him out for sure, but Cam trusted him and made the play on 4th and long and continued the drive, and once again, we won because of Cam. Cam will be an elite QB within 2 years.

No offense, but you're gonna have a tough time pushing a Bleacher Report article as "best" of something.

Especially when nfl.com is churning out article after article slighting Cam.

I don't care who writes it. Although it is good to read a positive article about Cam. Or the Panthers for that matter.

I can handle the negative stuff. As long as it isn't just some guy's opinion, or not based on any facts. Just some smear campaign for no apparent reason. I mean, just because you don't think we will be as good as last year, does not mean you have to throw crap at the wall to make a point.

I guess what I am trying to say is. As long as you are honest in your opinion. I don't care what you have to say. I can live with negatives, as long as you have a valid point.

Love this part, and my main argument as to why Cam has the most potential of all the young QBs in the league.

Newton took an unusual path to the NFL, playing just one season of Division I college football.

The progression chart above shows his age, instead of the season, for a reason: Having just turned 25, Newton's only a year older than rookie Tom Savage and only two years older than rookies like Derek Carr, Aaron Murray, Logan Thomas and AJ McCarron. Yet, Newton didn't have the college experience many of those players did.

Newton's done most of his development as a passer in his 48 career NFL starts, and his receivers have been getting worse all the while.

Dude was pretty much winging it early on in his career.  One year of "real" college ball, completely raw in his mechanics as a passer coming out, no off-season to work with his teammates his rookie year, etc.  He basically just spent a bit of time with Chris Weinke, went over some basics, then got tossed into the fire week 1.

We finally started to see a bit more of a 'refined' Cam last year with glimpses of the raw talent and ability he showed his first two years in the league.  Once he puts it all together and hits that perfect medium between pocket presence, passing mechanics, decision-making, and natural God-given ability - which he has the most of any QB in the league - well... Deion said it best.

Upgrading the offensive talent around him wouldn't hurt either.

Said it elsewhere, but a fair number of folks on here judge the 'greatness' of football writers by the amount of positive things they say about the Panthers, which is frankly pretty silly.

Someone says something bad about the Panthers and people get their feelings hurt like it's something personal.  It's not.  It may or may not be misinformed, but it's pretty much never personal.

Fans get their feelings wrapped up in a team.  Writers generally don't.
