Alonzo Gee Acquired From Cleveland For Haywood and Powell

Recommended Posts

I think it's 10 million non-guaranteed next year. I have no idea how though, maybe some weird part of the amnesty waiver system?

Edit, link.

Not sure about that. Hoopshype has him listed as a free agent next year and obviously there is no chance that we would keep him for $10mil, so I would say this is probably his last year in the NBA.

Right, but it's non guaranteed so we could use it in a deal to team that doesn't want money back, like we did with Dallas in the Chandler for. . . I wanna say Dalembert swap.

Yep, but the print said it's only non-guaranteed if he isn't waived before August 8th.

With that being said, the trade would be pointless because your not going to get anything back for a guy that will be cut right after being traded. Trading Haywood actually wouldn't open up any cap space when the contract isn't guaranteed.

All you're doing is throwing $10 mil on the salary book then just taking it right back off in a trade.

Right, a team would do it in a salary dump. The rockets just gave up Lin and a first round pick to dump some money.

Yeah but Lin can still play and his contract is guaranteed. If Haywood was traded next year it would be for the purpose of being cut (i.e. what we were going to do with Gee). So what you are doing is putting an extra $10 mil on the books, then taking it right back off. It actually doesn't save you any money.

If Haywood could still play, I'd definitely see your point. However, I don't think Haywood can physically last any longer in the NBA.

Right, so lets just use the Lin trade as an example. Houston said, we need cap room, so we will send you Lin to get rid of his salary. Plus a first rounder for the trouble. So the Lakers get a year of a pretty decent player and a first round pick, but they only give up cap room.

Now absorbing contracts like that is great, but it requires you to have a lot of space, which we might not if we sign a hayward or lance. So we hold on to the contract and see if somebody wants to dump salary next year. Worst case, we just dump the contract and are out nothing.

But lets say, for argument, his contract was non-guaranteed this year, and we were involved. We would send Houston the non guaranteed salary, they cut him, and we get a backup point guard and a draft pick.

I'm just saying it could be a nice chip to have in case somebody wants to dump, salary for an asset. And it comes at no risk.

Ohhhhh.... Okay, I see what you are saying now lol. I guess that could have been a possibility.

I had a massive brain cramp. Sorry that you had to right it out in kindergarten for me to understand it lol.

Haha, it happens. The rules are so complicated in NBA trades that having over 100 posts in this forum should get us college credit for a business degree. The occasional brain cramp is to be expected.

So what do we get for him now?

Most likely a trade exception and cap space.

Essentially the Cavs opened up cap space by trading Gee to N.O. Now they are filling that cap space by acquiring Haywood and Powell, while sending nothing back except for maybe future draft considerations.

The deal itself opens up $2 million dollars in extra cap space.
