Would You Support a Lloyd Over Kasay Changing of the Guard to Open Up a Roster Spot?

Of course Kasay is one of the best, EVER, IMO. And I'm sure I'll miss him once he hangs it up b/c for the most part he's been so clutch (I'll forget about the Superbowl one day), accurate, and consistent. It's been a great luxury to have him...

I know all the articles that have been done say he's nowhere near done, and if we let him go, I'm sure 20+ teams would jump all over him.

That being said, would you support letting Kasay go and allow Lloyd to take over all of the kicking duties to open up a roster spot? Generally, I wouldn't... But, with all the young talent at skill positions this year, I would hate to let a guy go that could end up being a big time contributor here ala Fiammetta, Beavers, Jamall Lee, Ryne Robinson, etc. (I think Goodson is safe).

The dilemma with keeping a KOS is just that, a dilemma. Think about KR and PR. What if Goodson can return KO's but not punts, as has been suggested? But, what if Beavers or Robinson is outstanding on PR? Well, what do we do? Keep a spot for an extra kicker? Or open a spot up for a guy that can return punts and possibly contribute on offense or defense as well? So would you do it?

I agree that I HATE taking up a roster spot with a kickoff specialist, but Lloyd is that good at it so it doesn't sting as badly. I wouldn't do it now because Lloyd has not fared well when asked to kick FGs in his career IIRC. And as far as I know he hasn't been allowed to attempt any even in preseason in Carolina. I think it would be nice to let him practice those and get a shot in preseason to see if he is at least possibly capable. I am pretty sure I have read interviews with him that his ultimate goal IS to be a PK whether in Carolina or elsewhere.

wow good question - thats a tough one for me 0 i think i would give it 1 more year. But obviously letting him go is not going to open up THAT much cap room and I thing we have enough multidimentional players that its not a big concern.

But in the end Kasay has been there from the start and those type of player are rare. I think you let him leave on his own terms.

Well, we've all seen what having an inconsistent field goal kicking game can do to a season... and we've all seen that Kasay is not capable of kicking off on a regular basis anymore (see 2007 season), so for now, no... I think we must keep them both. I don't think that one more player at another position will make up the difference of missing Kasay kicking field goals.

Foxy is too loyal to give Lloyd a tryout in preseason when it comes to someone like John Kasay.

No way. If John Kasay wants to kick until he is 50, you let him do it. You never cut a man who has been so loyal and so clutch for us since our franchise's inception to make room for, what? A fifth string wide receiver? No way in hell.

Lloyd is the heir apparent and foxy needs to let him kick some in the preseason so we know whether or not we have a genuine option for Kasay's heir or if we need to do some shopping when he hangs 'em up. But no, you keep Kasay on the roster until his leg falls off

I don't know if I'd quite go that far... I like Kasay, and I hope he retires a Panthers, but football is a business and if he starts missing field goals, he should be gone... as long as he stays accurate, by all means keep him around. I think Kasay will retire before that day comes because he has a lot of class.
