First Job Interview (Post College)

At least shave your balls... that way, you know, if your interview turns into a pr0n video, you're good to go.

It's true, this happens.

We need to become best friends.

it WOULD be cool to have an old-school pen pal...says the guy who currently only has a mailing address nearly 300 miles away since I just rebooted my life today with this job.

I hope you get it.  I just wouldn't stress about it.  Be at ease, be yourself, don't worry; if you don't get this, you may get something else.

Mirroring. Copy your interviewer's subtle mannerisms, pace of speech, tone of voice.

I do this all the time with people I meet in business. It's highly influential, because it gives the other person a false sense of agreement and friendship.

Only do this if you can pull it off whole sounding and looking genuine. I would not recommend trying this for the first tine in a job interview. May not go over too well.

But that being said, there is a lot you can glen and do from their mannerisms.

For instance, if they appear very driven and direct, sitting back passively can come across as uninterested and lazy. But, if they are more of a cerebral introvert, being aggressive and gung ho in the interview could also come across as too "in your face".

Best advice is to be yourself.

Putting on an act may get you a job. But, you won't keep it for long if the fit is not right.

I would make sure if they ask you your salary range you have done research on what you should make. Honestly the competition for that job in New haven, ct with those hours should be slim. So don't be afraid to ask for decent compensation. No way I would do that job for twelve dollars an hour. I would also speak in terms of salary not a per hour number if the question is asked.

I'm glad you brought this up. The median salary income for video editor's in newsrooms is around $50,000. Since I'm fresh out of college with no experience would $35,000 seem realistic?

How big is the news station? Depending on how large the station is I don't think your lack of on job experience is going to be an issue if your degree is suited for the job. Experienced guys that have proven they are good aren't going top want to work those hours. I don't know cost of living there but id probably come in slightly under median if it's an established station. If you think 35k is good for normal hours id add about 20% just because of the hours. Depends on how desperate for work you are.

it's a fairly large station . Maybe I will ask 42-45. I'll do some more research.

Agreed.  I work with people everyday, most I have known for a very short time and can pull this off.

Without years of reading people for a living I would be careful.

And as for the money, 35 isn't enough for those hours in CT....but that's just me.
