If they used all their remaining cap space on one player, could they not then use the MLE on another?

I looked into it more, apparently teams with cap space get a smaller exception in the new CBA.  Instead of the normal MLE around $5 mil, we get an exception worth $2.5 mil (which is very similar to what we gave Roberts)

Because Blatche is a center, not a combo forward.

When your backup center is a one-dimensional rim protector that has some of the worst hand-eye in the league, you might want to invest in a better back up.

 

He's a PF/C, and in Washington, he mostly played PF, which is probably his preferred position.
