Big Super Important Defensive Question for those of you who have been to camp.....

I'm balls to the wall right now, I work 5 days a week and then have 2 hour football practice right after work everyday.

I love it, the team is coming together and looking good.

So I love all the updates, tweets not so much because I dont get home until about 1am your time and my time is at a premium.

From what I've seen of Meeks style before, I don't think they'll play far off the ball, at least not as far off as they did before.

Just for a possible insight, take a look at the case of Jason David.

David cashed in on a big free agent contract a few years back after having a solid year at corner with the Colts (their Super Bowl season, I believe). Unfortunately for him, he hasn't quite proven to be worth the cash he got signing in New Orleans. One reason analysts point to is a change in emphasis.

The Saint defense as previously run by Gary Gibbs primarily had corners playing zone, whereas David's career showing with the Colts came playing primarily man coverage. You could infer from this that Meeks prefers man coverage and that his schemes work best with that in play.

(only an inference though; a reasonable one, but still an inference)

If you have not been to camp you are not a real fan.

Or you're like me and you live across the country.

I sure hope Meeks doesn't keep Trgo's tradition of giving the WRs 10 yards and the comeback every time. :out:

Off man/cvr2 standard shell doesn't really bother me until we're in 3rd down and the #yds off>#yds for 1st down. To me, it's like a receiver stopping his route short of 1st down yardage. It can be successful, but other ways should be tried first.

Not that I agree with the approach, but I think the objective in doing that is to keep everything in front of the defense as to force the receivers to cut their routes short of first down yardage.

I think it will depend on what he sees in camp and whether he thinks we can pull off man coverage or not. He has a history of sometimes playing a man under cover 2 on first and second down and zone on third down. He also has played cover 1 robber with man under and the strong safety playing a rover that can take away the curls, screens and draws. But I suspect he will introduce it slowly throughout the preseason and go pretty vanillla for a few games especially since the 2nd and third strings will be playing at least half to 2/3rds of the time. As the season progresses I expect him to go to more man if he thinks the DBs are up to it. Other wise we will use a lot of zone.

What I am waiting for, is to see how he mixes it up and makes adjustments as we go. Will he change things up if they are not working or keep the same way like Trgo did all game long and each week.

You do understand that man and zone coverage are both used frequently during the game and most defenses, even at the high school level, do not run JUST man or JUST zone. For an NFL quarterback it would be all too easy to exploit a one-way defense like that....

    • Corbett knows he needs to take a prove it deal and I think he will.  I watched an interview and he was convincingly adamant he wants to stay.  Two different injuries in two years was bad luck.  It's not like it was the same thing.  He knows the game and figures to end his career in a place where he is happy.  You can't really compare how Bryce did with Mays compared to AC.  AC was hurt week 5.  Bryce was on the bench after week 2 and didn't return until week 8. Mays is basically under team control next year as a RFA.  We could offer the right of first refusal for 3m.  I'd offer a 2 year deal which averages a little higher so you can manipulate the cap on his deal.  Additionally, I'd resign Corbett to a team friendly deal.  Many forget he has positional versatility like BC.  Corbett is only one year older, is two inches shorter, about 10 pounds heavier, and has arms that are one inch longer.  Corbett has played LT in college and guard/center in the NFL.  Ideally, bring back all three, but if BC gets big time $$$ AC and CM can battle for center and the other becomes a swing lineman. If we cut bait on Yosh Nijman we may be able to keep all three.  I'd sign up for that in a heartbeat.
    • As fans, we often exaggerate how bad our team owner is because we are so invested and focused on our team. We don't really see how bad other team owners, like Woody Johnson or Robert Kraft, because we are focused on the Panthers.
