Five cities you recommend when foreigners to visit the U.S.

If you want to see the real America that made this country what it was until about 25 years ago ( when in fact it was a great nation) then forget either coast and forget all the big cities and go to the north end of route 66 and start driving. Look route 66 up on the internet and you will understand.

The "real" America does not exist, just like the "real" Europe or "real" Africa don't exist.  Every single state in the US has something special and different to offer.  Some places I have been and particularly like....  the Florida Keys, Maine (Mount Desert Island), San Francisco, New Mexico (Taos), and Charleston (SC).  In fact, I live in Charleston and I believe it is one of the most beautiful cities in the US.  You will not get the big city experience and (at least if you stay away from some areas in North Charleston) you don't run a huge risk of ending up with a bullet in your head.  Great beaches (not that I care for them), great food (and I mean really great food), great fishing (yes, I do like that), lots and lots of history (Fort Sumter, beautiful plantations etc) and in general very friendly people.

I don't know why everyone says New York City... it's loud, dirty, and nobody speaks English.

That's exactly what makes it so unique. It is the epitome of the melting pot that is America. I could never live there, but it is fun to visit.

I would not recommend cities. If you are going to America go see the country. Grand Canyon, mammoth caves, Yellowstone national park, and Mt. Rainier. USA was made great by the country folk who sought out new lands and riches. Even West Virginia logging is interesting. There are big cities all over the world, but USA's history and character was built on the frontier.

In a somewhat separate note I had a friend visit from Sweden and all she could comment on was the number of McDonalds.....

Stay away from the big cities of NYC and LA..nothing real about them. NYC is overrated, although if you are going to go, go in the fall. Its not as hot and doesn't smell like a burning pile of garbage.

I'd stick to come of the "smaller" cities. I loved Chicago when I was there a few months ago.

If you want to see Niagara Falls, go on the Canadian side. Nothing but run down building on the American side.

Why do you consider Upstate NY a foreigner?

Because I know 20 + people that moved to Charlotte from Buffalo out of free will and all they do is bitch about the south. If they hate it that bad then I consider them foreign to my tastes.

Just out of curiosity, what types of things do they bitch about? I'm more Rochester than Buffalo, and yes there is a drastic difference between the two.

I guess I can see them (us?) complaining about all of that.

We hate our winters but hate when it's hot out. More so the humidity than the heat.

Accents I can see as well but not sure why they complain about them. I speak with people all over the US on a daily basis and even though there is an accent with NC/SC population, its not bad. If I can understand the words coming out of your mouth I have no issue with an accent.

Sweet tea? Who doesn't love sweet tea? I guess they prefer Loganberry to your sweet tea.

Local teams - I don't get this one either. Outside of the Bills and Sabres, they don't have anything. Their college teams sucks and everyone is a Syracuse fan anyways. I'm in the minority since I'm a Panthers, Braves, Duke fan. I don't belong in WNY.

Food - WNY food isn't anything to write home about.. I can't think of anything that stands out. Some specialty items like Beef on weck, sponge candy, Mighty Taco… oh and Wegmans!

I think in the end, we just like to complain a lot over stuff we can't control. I have a few friends that have moved to NC and seem to love it. Only thing I see them complain about is how everything shuts down with the little bit of snow you get.
