Hornets willing to part with #9 for Afflalo

Where is all this nonsense coming from that it Afflalo would be a rental?

Does half the board work for the Hornets front office and no something that the other half doesn't?

I think as a fan base we need to temper our expectations. The NBA Draft is nothing like the NFL Draft, just because you have a top 10 pick doesn't mean you are guaranteed a premier player, it's much more of a crap shoot.

Out of the teams that picked in the top 10 in the 2012 NBA Draft (I'm not even going to discuss last years draft) only three teams came away with premier players (Drummond, Lillard, and Davis).

Furthermore out of the last three drafts, there are only three players (Irving, Lillard, and Davis) that are averaging more points per game than Afflalo.

So unless you truly believe that one of these potential picks has the chance to be a legitimate game changer in the the next two years, you should definitely be open to trading the pick.

One thing we can all learn from Cleveland... just because you have a top 10 pick doesn't mean you have to use it. Tell me, how are Irving, Thompson, Waiters, and Bennett doing right now?

He has an opt out in his contract, he'll be a free agent next season. Because he's been way out performing his contract. Plus if you give him 10 million then the only money left would be needed to resign Kemba.

Pretty much locking the team at least for 2-3 years into a starting lineup of

Kemba

Affalo

MKG

Zeller

Al Jefferson.

That's still 5-6 seed with a couple playoff wins, not a series win.

No last year was the year to temper expectations. This year is leaps and bounds above that draft.

I agree that this draft is much better talent wise than last years draft, but just because the talent is better doesn't meant it will develop any quicker than normal. Not to mention, there are some players that never seem to develop (from the 2010 and 2011 NBA Draft: Al-Farouq Aminu, Wesley Johnson, Ekpe Udoh, Bismack Biyombo, Derrick Williams, Jan Vesely, and Jimmer Fredette; all top ten picks). Just for reference since 2010 only two 'superstars' have been drafted in the top 10 (Paul George and Damian Lillard).

Here is an excerpt form a Bonnell article written a few days ago.

The experience-vs.-potential balance is something Clifford mentioned occasionally during the season. At roughly the All-Star break during February, when it became clear Jefferson’s presence was getting the then-Bobcats into playoff contention, Clifford told his players he was done making “developmental” decisions concerning playing time.

That meant no more parsing out minutes just because one player was younger or a former high draft pick. Clifford coached the rest of the season for now, not the future.

“I think you always want guys who have performed vs. guys who have potential,” Clifford said of the experience/youth mix.

Clifford often has said there were just a handful of rookies during his 14 years in the NBA who were ready to truly impact games.

“If you want to go back and look at it, (Dwyane) Wade was a go-to guy right away, Carmelo (Anthony) was, LeBron (James) obviously was, Damian Lillard was,” Clifford said. “But it’s hard to go back in my time and find a lot of (rookies) who come in and make real impact on good teams.”

Clifford hasn't steered this team in the wrong direction yet, so I'll defer to him until I feel the need to do otherwise.

I know he has an opt out but that doesn't mean he can't be re-signed

(see the Josh McRoberts scenario).

McRoberts out performed his contract so he opted out in hopes of a bigger contract. The only difference is that we can upgrade the power forward position from McRoberts. I'm not sure you can upgrade the shooting guard position next year in free agency unless you are willing to give Klay Thompson a max contract.

The no 9 pick looked good when we got it. Now, it's looking like the worst pick in the whole draft. There's really no value other than trading it for a vet ( AA ).

After the consensus top8 guys, it's a drop off from there. You could pretty much close your eyes and pick a name out of the bag. It doesn't really matter who you pick.

Other than Ennis, Gary Harris and Stauskas are the only two players I would feel good about taking. But, how long would it take them to develop? Are they even better than Gerald Henderson right now? Probably not.

That's why I rather just trade it for Afflalo. Plus, considering our draft busts in the past it makes it even more easier to send the pick to Orlando.

The 4th, 9th, and 12th picks now could move Orlando to the no.1 spot.

I would rather have Stephenson bc he's better all around player, but he'll cost more than the $7.8 mil of AA for the next two seasons. And, signing Stephenson would make it harder to build a complete team. Rather go with AA/Deng than Lance/Deng.

Why are people constantly trying to put our young players on the bench for old guys who aren't helping this team.

Deng is done there is no need in bringing him here.

The only way MKG is going to develop is if he's on the court. I don't see a reasonable scenario where you would try and upgrade the small forward position unless you're getting LeBron. I believe that getting a productive backup is key which is why I'm not totally 100% against McDermott.

The positions that I personally think need to be upgraded are the shooting guard position and the power forward position.

I would love to get two of the following in some scenario that adds up to $20 mil. Realistically we'd have to trade for one (shipping out Henderson's salary) and sign the other.

Shooting Guards

- Afflalo (would have to acquired on trade)

- Stephenson

- Bledsoe (would have to offer max and then trade for Young to fit salaries).

Power Forwards

- Gasol

- Randolph

- Young (would have to be acquired in trade)

Consider 10-12 of that money already gone for Kemba's new deal, that leaves the team 10-16 million depending on what they do with Hendo. MJ isn't going to go into Lux tax unless the team can compete to reach the finals.

We're going to be going over next year regardless, so we might as well spend to the limit and exercise Kemba's and possibly Biz's bird rights.

Oh and the luxury tax is supposed to be around $80 million for 2015. We will be over the cap but we aren't even going to be close to that number. My guess is $70 million if we address the power forward and shooting guard position.

I don't think Kemba is getting 10-12. He's more in the range of 8-10. If he wants more, then see ya.
