he will become a UFA per ESPN

He had already made it clear he would not exercise the $1.2 million player option for next season and test free agency in hopes of landing a more lucrative, long-term deal. Young also expressed his desire to remain with the Lakers if possible.

"I always wanted to be a Laker and it will be a dream come true to still be here, but it's crazy," the seven-year veteran said in April. "You never know what happens. Last year they had a whole different team. It's obvious they're going to make some changes."

The Lakers have just three players under contract for next season -- Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash and Robert Sacre -- and have a team option to retain point guard Kendall Marshall for $915,243.

No.

How the hell did he even get a thread?

Just because he isn't a superstar doesn't make him 'mediocre' and we are just thinking 'realistically' because Love, LBJ, Melo and all that other nonsense some if the guys on here talk will simply not happen.

That said, a starting 5 of

Kemba

Stephenson

Deng/Young

#24

Jefferson

... Is a damn good team

C'mon guys. Quit thinking mediocrity.

Nick Young played sixth man for the Lakers last season, averaged about 17ppg. What did our sixth man do for us?

Can't say I remember a very productive sixth man. When we bring Hendo or MKG off, we don't really have a kid that can score like Young did last season. So bringing the kid in to play the sixth man role would be an improvement.

You might say stop looking at guys like this, but if we are sticking with Hendo and MKG as starters, we need rotation options, scorers that can come off the bench - Nick Young fills that role. Now if the desire is to move Hendo or MKG to sixth man, and upgrade those positions (eg. we sign Stephenson and/or Deng, or a FA and then Butler via Chicago for the draft picks), then fair enough Nick Young isn't needed because Hendo and MKG as back ups are good players.

To say stop looking at mediocrity is a harsh statement when Young is likely to be a sixth man player, and that's a role he would give us a serious upgrade on.

we aren't signing Melo or LeBron, let's get that through our head chuck. It's better think about players we actually could sign than a situation that won't happen.

So you guys want to overpay for a guy like that?

I know we're not getting a James or Melo. But, the 5mil or so that you guys want to give Young could help bring in a guy like Gasol, Lance, Hayward, Gortat, Deng, etc already.

Quit giving out bad contracts!

We do need to build a supporting cast, and at the right price (like I've said before), Young can be a good addition at sixth man.

Looking at those guys:

Gortat would be a good center.

Lance and Hayward would upgrade the SG position, but at what cost? I think they'll be in the $12 million plus bracket, and that's if their respective teams let them go.

Deng was a very good player in Chicago. He'd upgrade the SF position, and that would let MKG drop to the bench. We might not need Young then, though Young could be sixth man and back up SG which is a decent option to have when the bench comes on. MKG brings elite defense, while Young brings offensive flair and output.

Gasol is a good player, he'd slot nicely in at PF or C with Al next to him. But what contract will he command? He did miss games last season, and he's had niggling injuries. Is he still worth taking a risk on? Probably. But again it depends on price.

Now I do agree we need to add another star or borderline star to the line up. But if we can grab Deng for $12m, then Young for $4m. Then we upgrade SF and sixth man/backup SG. We'd still need a PF but that could come in the draft at #9 or #24.

(1)Trade #9 for Afflalo ($7.750 mil)

(2) Sign Luol Deng ($12 mil)

(3) Adreian Payne at #24

(4) Semaj Christon at #45

PG: Kemba Walker / Semaj Christon / FA

SG: Arron Afflalo / Gerald Henderson ? / Gary Neal

SF: Luol Deng / Michael Kidd-Gilchrist / Jeff Taylor

PF: Cody Zeller / Adreian Payne

C: Al Jefferson / Bismack Biyombo

That's a pretty good roster that can compete in the wide open Eastern Conference. Plus, how to use your money right and smartly.

Afflalo is an upgrade to Hendo, not Young. And, I rather pay one of the best two guard in the NBA (Afflalo) at $7.8 mil for the next two seasons than giving a similar contract ($5mil) to Young whos pretty much a 6th man.

Now, if you could move Hendo in a trade then go ahead and give Young that contract. And, all you guys can be happy.

Young is alright but I don't see him playing as well as a game by game starter nor do I see him being worth what he'll get paid. I want Jeff Green. That dude can get coached up into getting 30 points per game. I would trade 24 for him if the Celtics would do it.

    • Him and Sanders are the only QBs I would consider in the first round. I won’t be upset if we take Sanders, unlike some people on the board. Both have potential to be really good NFL QBs if the teams can develop them.  But as we have seen teams are not willing or are unable to now properly develop rookie QBs.
    • I remember the last time we had a Cam at QB in Charlotte
    • Because Young is so historically bad that it just skews too far outside the normal deviations that perspective is easily lost. That or they just don't want to believe it.  The struggles last year would have been more about the infighting and poor roster building or idiot owner's hiring practices than with Stroud. He wouldn't have been as good but he wouldn't have been ruined here and the pressure was not Carr-esk if you take out the Young created portion from his playing style.  Dude is a young guy on a team coached by a Defensive guy building a good D but not building up the O in year 2 of his HC 1st time gig. Seems familiar... Go look at his output this year and not just some crappy Thursday night implosion game, I would take that in a second and never ever look back every time without a shred of doubt while eating 4 of those games a year with a giant smile on my face.
