2014 Cam's Offense

Saw a similar article to this on Friday and then this one today, kinda surprised noone threaded it.  Good to see our staff is letting one of the premier players input his thoughts into the offense.

Over the last 10 weeks, we're seeing Cam maturing, and doing things in other ways to contribute and improve," Rivera said as he headed out to the final practice of the spring last Thursday. "It got to the point where Cam was installing things. He led the led the meetings. He was sitting the receivers, the tight ends and helping them, not just standing next to (offensive coordinator Mike Shula). You see stuff now you didn't see before.

I doubt it is the first time, but it is a relief to know our coaches aren't super hard-headed control freaks where they wan to keep the offense as theirs, but instead letting the leader on the field allowed to give input.

Our offense was certainly not a killer last year but we were clutch, and we are winning games in the closing minutes rather than losing them, with the exception of the Buffalo and Seattle games.

There's a more macro element they've addressed, as well. Newton, who has always had the ability to impose his will on the field, was drilled in the early portion of his career on learning to manage games. The idea now is to begin to produce more force-of-nature moments again while maintaining the responsible quarterback play he's been taught. To Rivera, the four game-winning drives Newton led over the final eight games of the 2013 regular season were a good sign as to where he could take things next.

"I think it's great when a guy can manage a game," said Rivera. "But there comes a point where you have to make a play. He does that. He made some great plays, he had some teammates make great catches, great runs. But he's the trigger guy, and that's part of his growth. ... The one thing you don't ever want to do is put it all on one guy. That becomes hard. We want him to sense it -- It's time to make a play."

Great quotes and something we all here have been looking forward to in cam's development.

Some questioned if he had "it" prior to this past year. He proved everyone wrong.

I like what Rivera has said about mixing managing games and those jaw dropping plays were accustomed to from him. We are so damn lucky to have this guy it's insane

I think I am more than excited to see what the new Sr. offensive quality consultant/coach can bring to the passing game. I apologize I can't remember his name and i am being lazy by not looking it up. Many huddlers wanted him as our offensive coordinator instead of Shula. I am hopeful he can restore some of the down field passes we seemed to lose last season.

Before anyone mentions it I know Ginn dropped a few long ones but their are some looks that can be re-added that will be beneficial.

Lol you should see the NFL.com article that has these quotes.  The hate toward us is strong.

Although it does make me somewhat glad to see how much respect Smitty has earned across NFL fan bases.  Even our great players are usually undermined.

This is part of what happens, when you gut the receiving squad and remove a strong personality veteran such as Steve Smith, and make Cam the unquestioned leader of the offense.

Gettleman knew exactly what he was doing.

And though I didn't read the article, I'm surprised to see NFL.com disucussing this so early in the season. This tells me, it's more likely true, and not just BS/fluff.

Jis name is John Ramsdell and he has had huge success in turning offenses around. He does the work and others get the credit.

His connections to Ricky Proehl with the Rams; Mike Tolbert, and Ron Rivera with the Chargers has brought him to Carolina.

This offense will improve with Ramsdell weighing in on the offense.

I don't think Ramsdell will install a new offense or even change this one that much.  He is a Coryell guy and variations of that scheme are what we ran with Chud as well.  The areas he should help is with Cam and with the receivers is going to more hot reads and automatic plays based on defensive formations.  Helping Cam know where everyone is on the field.  He has beena quarterbacks coach most of his career so I don't think he is really trying to take over from Shula but help Cam read blitzes, work on his timing and footwork.

Im going to disagree somewhat. While I know he want change the system, I do think he will focus on bringing more wrinkles to this offense that lost steam late in the season.

I think our personnel/execution limited what plays we called last year. Our staff believed playing it safe and taking risks on 4th down gave us the best chance to win. I hope we take some more shots down field, but still stay in situations where we can stay aggressive on 4th down if we don't convert on 3rd. We have some sure handed vets, but we don't want 4th & 7 a lot.

i like the fact we are allowing our QB to give his input and create plays that he is comfortable with now and then during the games.  should boost confidence and enthusiasm for the entire offense.
