I mean, we're pretty much gonna have:

 

Benjamin

Cotchery

Avant (Slot)

 

..with an opening for one of the following: Brown, King, Underwood, Presley, McNutt, or Bersin to come in with a Hixon type role as their floor.  My guess is King or Brown.  But given how we ran things last year w/ the RBs, screens and now that we may do more 2 TE sets, we really just need 3 guys to be effective at WR.    

 

We actually positioned ourselves well not only to produce methodical drives and scores but find a good diamond in the rough if one is there.

Well if the media is right, then Gman did a crappy job. They're saying he got rid of a solid WR corps and brought in a bunch of losers. I think that opinion will end up being crap, and he'll be credited with doing a great job, considering what he had to work with. I don't see any way the current group won't be better than last year's.

Im still shocked people are sleeping on Underwood. I dont think King or Brown make it OVER Underwood. He has proven in Tampa he can be effective, i see no reason for him to take a step back.

Honestly we don't need a great WR corps just guys who can catch the ball when needed and help move the sticks.  When we get close they have to be good in the redzone and help us score as teams put their emphasis on stopping Tolbert and Cam.  We should be good for around  24 points a game which should put us in every game.  How many we win will be determined by what always makes the difference.  Making or not making the 5 or 6 plays on which every game hinge.

 

How many of those great offense teams also have great defenses?  Not many.  It is hard to have great playmakers on both sides of the ball and frankly we are loaded on defense.  That is how we roll.  Unless you hit on all your draft picks and your free agents you end up typically having to choose what side of the ball you want to be great on.  Next year we pick up a LT and another receiver or two while we have to choose between keeping Hardy and Johnson but won't keep both.  If our depth at DE doesn't improve that won't always be a position of strength.  Each year you have to do a juggling act with the current free agency system.  I would have a middling offense and a terrific defense than the other way around.

There really is no reason to think we are going to have a great receiving corps... There just isn't. That saying, there is also no reason why you can be optimistic. Im not, but you can be. I see us being about the same as last year. Cam still needs to grow and hopefully after we get out from under the dead money we can continue to add weapons to the passing game. Cotchery, and Avant are role players at the end of their careers. KB looks to be solid so far, Olsen is a very good TE, but other than that its just role players. I do believe we need to use Tolbert more like he was used with the Chargers. He could be our big version of Sproles. I think he's the best option in the backfield, and hopefully he survives the RB purge when it does happen.

It's going to be more of a possession type of attack instead of big flashy plays.  We have the WRs who can catch in traffic and high point the ball, which moves the chains.

 

The only real debate is whether or not that's the type of offense that we should have or if it is going to be fun to watch. We are tailoring to our defense and are trying to establish long drives with tough catches for first downs and a strong running game.

If they do use Tolbert like the Chargers did it would make a huge difference. That saying... The Oline has to prove itself. If not Tolbert will stay in his role now. Block and short yardage.

I hope so man but I havnt seen it yet in our system so Im skeptic. If he plays deep then I hope he can catch above the rim, thats what I really want to see from him in preseason. Go up and grab that poo at the high point and reel it in.

While it's not the flashiest WR corps in the league, it might be the best BLOCKING WR corps in the league, which is a huge positive for the running game.  I'd love to see Jonathan Stewart have a comeback player of the year caliber season.  

 

Gettleman did Newton a favor by getting WR's that can go GET the ball.  Let's just admit it, Cam's not Aaron Rodgers in terms of accuracy.  He needs receivers that can catch a ball that might not have been thrown perfectly.  He has that now.  There won't be any LaFell type drops or balls sailing over the head of Steve Smith.  Avant has some of the best hands in the NFL, Benjamin is a giant, and Cotchery is a veteran who knows how to get open in the redzone.  It's all positive folks.
