Cleveland doctors discovered right foot injury in exams and passed info onto Embiid reps, sources tell Yahoo. Fear is a right foot fracture.

(Anonymous NBA GM)

“I think there is a point at which you use a pick on him, where you’re hoping maybe these are just fluke things that are not going to be recurring,” one general manager told Sporting News. “But that point is not in the Top 5 or so. You can't use a Top 5 pick. I think there are too many other good options there to think about using the pick on one who has these injury problems.”

(SI)

The news that Kansas center Joel Embiid has a stress fracture in the navicular bone in his right foot will have a significant impact on next week's NBA draft. Embiid, the projected No. 1 pick in SI.com's latest mock draft, is expected to slip several spots, maybe more.

"With that type of injury," said a Western Conference executive, "I wouldn't take him in the top-ten."

Damn, is it?

I know it's a different injury than Noel last year, but I wouldn't doubt it could drop him down. Tho, I would still take him at 9.

Yeah its what yao had. But oddly I'm more comfortable taking him at 9 since he COULD be a rim protector than taking McDermott.

It is still worth the risk since we have two first rounders.

As opposed to Noel, Embid has a wayyy more NBA ready game and size.

Yes it could be horrible bc stress fractures in the feet of 7 footers are not ideal.. But this is the Hornet Karma!! We get a pick at 9 outta nowhere and now a top 3 pick may fall bc of a sudden injury..

With that said he will not make it to 9.

Stress fractures on the feet of big men can be devastating and can alter or end their entire careers.

Big Z had one and still had productive career though.

But you are talking now about drafting a guy that may rarely see the court or have a short career or will never be the same athletically.

He very well may slide out of the top 10. This is a serious injury and often times when big men get stress fractures it happens time and time again.

Bill Walton I think only played a handful of games over 4 years because of foot problems similar to this.

If I were GM I am not sure I could justify taking him until mid teens or so.

One of the problems is that stress fractures which are created by over use or weakened bones, in athletes in track and field and basketball or other running and jumping sports, run a risk of being recurring injuries.  That risk goes up even more when you are talking about big men.

That is another reason why this is so risky.  He may not have much of a career.

It is however, possible that that he heals and is fine and has a career with no problems.

The risk is drafting a guy that never really plays or has to have minutes and practice time managed to prevent over use of his feet.

I don't know.  I just would be scared to take this guy in the top 10.  once you get to 14/15 then you have to consider risk reward.  But in top 10 there are good players with less risk.

Having said all that, I think someone will draft him before us.  We haven't even had our team doctors look at him either.  Sometimes you can tell if a person is likely to have these be a recurring problem, so hopefully our team doctors are on top of it..

If we do draft him I will hope for the best though.

So the guy has already had back issues and now foot issues. Why would anyone want this guy in the first round. Doesn't matter how much talent a person has if they are hurt all the time. All of ya'll preaching that this is a sure fire can't miss player are about to eat crow bc he will not amount to much more then a journeyman due to injuries. Ya'll never think about someone jumping to the NBA to get paid before getting hurt.

    • I find it more like now that I have been forced to watch Young so much it isn’t as much of a shock to my senses.   Desensitized they call it.   For real, it just looks normal almost now. Where the first game of 2023 I wasn’t sure what I was looking at it was so out of bounds for NFL type play. I literally couldn’t make sense of what I had seen vs Atlanta that first week.
    • Lynch in SF. Great is subjective but he has done pretty well there.
    • Sure, except Stroud has the ability to stretch the field with deep passes. He did that often last night with ease, but couldn’t connect on many due to being flustered by the defense. BY9 gets flustered and can’t throw screens, let alone even think about any deeper passes. Stroud would’ve changed the franchise and done more with the situation last year. My thought at least.    the hope is that last year showed tepper that he needed to step back from football decisions. There’s a positive in most situations and maybe we’ll see a new tepper in the near future.
