My hunch is that if you take all the important stats for every team and came up with an overall offensive production ranking, the Panthers would be in the bottom third of the league.

With a QB like Cam Newton on the team, that is not acceptable.

Plenty of websites already do that. And we were not in bottom third of the league. We were one of the more efficient offensive teams in the NFL.

I don't think we'd be in the bottom third because we are ranked in the top five and top ten of the categories I listed like 3rd/4th down, efficiency per drive, ect.

Don't you think you should take everything into consideration? Like points, efficiency, 3rd down, 4th down ect.

We needed more big impact plays for sure but taking all of it into account gives a better picture of our offense last year. We weren't very good but we were not in the top 5 worst offenses

28th in yards, but we had a good defense that gave us solid field position throughout the year that made scoring easier by having to get far less yards.  I dont like using yards only to determine how good an offense was, but it certainly has to be considered.

I am Cam defender #1 but that's not true at all. To run those wide open offenses requires a QB who makes split second decisions correctly the vast majority of the time. Cam has improved dramatically and I think he's poised to get there but he still likes to hang on to his first read a beat too long right now. It takes several years to build that recognition and none of the young QBs are there yet.

Throw in a less than stellar supporting cast and the knowledge that the defense can keep it close, plus a little bit of gunshyness on Cam's part as he worked to keep his turnovers down, and conservative play calling and you can see how much of that ranking is to be expected.

i was more or less agreeing with you, just throwing extra reasons why the yards may have been so low.  we had our best defense and one of best special teams of all time last year, i certainly think we were capable of being better and definitely think we will be closer to 2011/12 this year.  i dont think saying we were the 28th best offense last year because thats where we ranked in yards is very accurate.

there is no question we need to get better at things. and i don't think of us as a top 10 offense last year.

 

but the hyperbole of using the 28th ranked offense is a misnomer and doesn't give credit where credit is due to Shula (who did some good things and some bad things last year)

 

I'm really excited about the red zone this year; with our interior guards, kb and cotchery. I think we see something similar but if a TE like Bwilliams steps up its going to be interesting to see how Shula utilizes all this talent, because we do have some talent (although unproven) on this offense.
