Who is the missing piece?

I don't think anyone would argue (although we all hope) that Bell and/or Chandler will not be a drop off from Gross.  What I meant to convey was that Gross was not such a large drop off from the "elite" LTs that it seriously affected our chances.

Gross was still darn good.  There's a significant drop off between darn good and "why is this guy on an NFL roster".

Y'all can forget about the pipe dream of Gross coming back.  He's done.  I might feel differently if he was still in football shape, but he's obviously moved on from football.  He looks like he'd be too light to play TE these days.  Good for him.

I'd love to convince him to come back but you can't hate a guy for walking away on his own terms.  He spent his entire career in Carolina, was always reliable, and never had his work ethic questioned.  If we had 22 guys like him we'd be fielding one helluva team.

megatron would help a lot.

or richard sherman/earl thomas in the secondary to make the defense OP.

I was wondering if anyone would go defense!  Do you think that bolstering our secondary would make us immediate Superbowl favorites?  I don't think there's any question that they'd be the top defense in the league (it probably wouldn't even be close) but do you think the offense is strong enough to hold up their end?  Defense does win championships... even in this passing league...

So we can move Cam to TE?  Or is everyone still on the "can he play LT" line?!

Good question.

We would line Cam up as a utility player. No matter where he lined up he might be playing any position.

If he lined up at LT he would be allowed to catch a pass.

He could line up as Punter on 2nd down and make a first down.

If we were facing 4th and 1 he could line up as free safety for the other team. And score.

Think about this.

I agree that RT & LT are our biggest needs but if we were to have Joe Thomas (or pick your favorite LT) on our team this year, would you say that would make us the odds on favorite?  Gross wasn't considered "elite" last year but I wouldn't say that there is such a large drop off that is significantly reduced our chances of a championship.

biggest weakness would now be a strength. would one legit OT make us the odds on favorite? probably not, that's why i said two.

and yes, replacing gross with bell or even chandler (who i am still not sold on) us very likely to be a significant dropoff.

think about us replacing kasay with mare. it could easily be that bad and the fact that it's the guy that protects cam's blind side could have catastrophic effects on the season moreso that just about anything else.

they haven't taken OT seriously this year and it very well could be the deciding factor on the season in a way that we really don't want.

I said in a later post, that you may have missed, that I wasn't implying that the drop off from Gross to Bell/Chandler wasn't a big drop off but rather that the drop off from the "elite" LTs to Gross wasn't that large.  Only to say that I don't think an elite "LT" would necessarily boost us to the top of the running.

an elite OT might not be the difference between playoffs and not playoffs, but where we were to where we are now could be the difference between winning and picking in the top 5 next year (where we'd probably draft a DE).
