Gross had planned to play through the 2014 season. But when he agreed to restructure his contract last year to help the team with its salary cap situation, the new deal was set up to automatically void this month.

That made Gross a free agent, although he had said he would only play for the Panthers

During his opening remarks last week, Gross said to Gettleman: “I didn’t like you very much last offseason, but I got over that.”

While Smith was not among those asked to restructure their contracts, he is said to have a level of distrust of Gettleman – and that was before his comments in Indianapolis.

I did not mean to imply you were making things up. I was implying that you seem to hold on to the past a little too long. And then let it get you all upset in the process.

It is just football. I know we all are emotionally invested in the Panther's. But it is meant as entertainment. Not life and death. Especially now, as we are headed in a good direction.

Ah, that is it. It ain't happening fast enough for you. You don't have the patience to let things play out. Well, tough. You have two choices. 1) Continue to act as you do. Or 2) Enjoy the damm ride.

Good luck with classes.

I'm not upset with the panthers or the moves they made. I get upset when people keeping using Marty Hurney as an excuse for the decisions Dave Gettleman makes. Not everything is Hurney's fault.

Gettleman took over the job but he still had different avenues he could choose to follow. Anybody who thinks every GM would have forced Gross into a paycut or cut Steve Smith is in denial. Anybody who thinks Gross redoing his deal isn't a big reason why he isn't here anymore is also in denial. Anybody who thinks every GM would have tagged Greg Hardy is also in denial.

Hurney is gone has been for damn near two years. At some point people need to stop blaming him for every damn thing, it's annoying.

I'm not mistaken, I just don't have the time or care to google to find the many articles on what he said. It's a fact that the restructure voided his contract this offseason correct?

lol no one is arguing with that one. The problem is half of what your saying is made up in your head and not fact. Everyone knows his contract got voided but you do not know if he was going to play another year if his contract didn't get voided.

Your basically saying the sky is blue/Gross contract got voided - (true but who cares everybody already knows this)

The part we really care about

Gross was going to play another year!! But when Dave Gettleman restructured his contract it made it void this offseason.

So what does that mean class? If Dave Gettleman doesn't force his PRO BOWL LT to take a paycut, he's our starting LT today.

You cant really prove this and believe me I would have remember if Gross was going to play another year if his contract did not get voided.

Riiiiight

I'm sure it would take a whole lot of time to do a quick Google search

But then again, Google does seem to have trouble finding things that don't exist, so unless Google can search your imagination, I guess the "many articles" will just have to remain unfound.

The only thing you might find would be people's speculation, and likely weak speculation like your own at that.

The video of Gross' press conference directly refutes your points.  As far as any rebuttal to that, face it, you've got nothing.

Go see my last post, and the article Joe Person wrote stating that Gross was going to play through the 2014 before the restructure. You ignored that like you do so much to try to prove your point. This forum isn't my life like it is yours, so no I don't have time to go and find poo. Got poo to do man.

I am not here to argue "blame" but the simple fact is the decisions (good and bad) made by the earlier staff have had a direct impact on the decisions made by the current staff.  To be honest with you this will continue for a few more years.

Please take a look at the 2015 cap hits of the players we have under contract and tell me that the decisions made by Hurney are still not affecting the team.

I think often people on this board tend to look at personnel moves in a vacuum without considering the big picture.  If there were no salary cap this would be feasible but with the current setup every move made has a ripple effect that often last for years.

Whether or not you want to blame Hurney or praise Gettleman I think it is important to judge these guys by the totality of their work.  You would be hard pressed to find a GM that is perfect on all their decisions made.  The draft clearly illustrates this.

I am curious to exactly which decisions of Gettleman you do not agree with and more importantly how would you have handled them?

The only thing, so far, that I have found fault with since DG has been here is the loss of Gross, but, IMO that was Gross, not DG that initiated that.

Gross has been leaning toward retirement for a while now, I don't think the contract had anything to do with it.

I think there is some truth to your comment.  Gross didn't like the contract he was given and didnt think that he could work for what he was going to get paid.  But that wasn't all Gettleman's fault.  What left tackle in their 30s is going to be signed to a big contract? The reason the money didn't feel that great was because Hurney gave him so much in his last deal and when Gettleman said restructure or we have to part ways Gross did it for a year and then retired.  But remember that Gross hasn't been a pro-bowler in years and wasn't worth 8-10 million a year at this point.  Gross like Smitty were short term solutions not long term fixes.  Gettleman is thinking down the road not just 2014.

Gross was a top 5 LT last year, he played great.  He was definitely worth that money, especially considering the season we had and the window of opportunity that was still open for us.  that 8 million would be worth it, especially more so than the 14 mil DE that got half his sacks in 2 games against subpar competition.

People blame Hurney so much I blame him for everything. Did you know he's the reason I got stuck in traffic last night? He caused that drunk guy to run his mustang into a telephone pole at midnight. I'm also sure he's the reason why my girlfriend won't let me be friends with that hot black chick that works at Tilted Kilt.

Very true, no one was complaining when we signed all those guys and kept the fanbase hopeful we'd still be good.  People act like they forgotten about the 2008 season.
