Carolina has almost $19M in dead money on the books

Gross was a top 5 LT last year, he played great.  He was definitely worth that money, especially considering the season we had and the window of opportunity that was still open for us.  that 8 million would be worth it, especially more so than the 14 mil DE that got half his sacks in 2 games against subpar competition.

He had a very good year.  His best in a few and that is the point really.  He could be here but he wasn't going to get a big money contract here or elsewhere. He didn't want to play for anyone else so it really became a decision where the money wasn't going to sway him unless it was a bunch.  He has plenty and doesn't need to keep playing.  He realizes that time was catching up and he got out while he was on top.  On his terms.  I don't think he liked the idea of retiring at first but came to the realization that every player eventually has to consider which is the end of their career.  He had a great run and finished his career with the Panthers like few players get to do.  Sure Gettleman paying him less was a factor in him retiring but not the only one I suspect.  He really hasn't been bitter or angry to suggest he parted with bad blood.
