Hurricanes In Heavy Talks To Acquire Patrick Marleau

According to Eklund from Hockey Buzz, the Hurricanes are in serious discussions with the San Jose Sharks to acquire Patrick Marleau.

The trade would send Cam Ward and two prospects to San Jose for Patrick Marleau and a pick in next years draft.

My guess is that the Sharks are pushing for Ryan Murphy or Brock McGinn to be involved and the Hurricanes are hesitant to do that.

At the end of the day, I think if the trade happens it will be Ward, Murphy, and Phil Di Giuseppe/Victor Rask for Marleau and a 2015 third round pick.

As for Marleau, last year Marleau had 33 goals, 37 assists, and 70 points.

Marleau would look pretty good on a line with Eric Staal and Alexander Semin.

I think that's a good trade for the Canes.  That gives them a first line with 3 players capable of putting up 70+ points in a season.

Yeah hopefully it gets done.

We need to make the playoffs next year or we are going to be going through a huge makeover.

Murphy could eventually become a good player but right now John Michael-Liles is a better pmd and power play quarterback.

Not to mention, the acquisition of Marleau would be huge.

Marleau - Staal - Semin could be a great line for us.

The experience and leadership that the 35 year old veteran would bring would also be huge.

That's a solid offensive team

I know he's usually full of crap but this one kind of makes sense.

Marleau is being shopped, Boyle was just traded and the Sharks are moving on from Niemi.

We'd have to retain some salary but Ward (15% retained, to replace Niemi), Murphy (to replace Boyle), and Rask (a good prospect) for Marleau (a great winger for Eric Staal) and maybe a 3rd or 4th round pick in the 2015 draft.

It makes sense for both teams if San Jose thinks Ward can return to form.
