Stewart healthy & moving well. Rivera's Party Line a Red Herring.

My point is that you cannot ask someone who has only seen stats to give you a good breakdown of how a team performed.

Cams improvised scrambles absolutely saved the entire offense last year. Without them, no playoffs, no winning record. The stats may not tell you that, but if you watched the games it is obvious.

Yeah it was all Cam in the running game last year. No one contributed at all but him.

What?? You say we rushed for 2026 and Cam accounted for 585 yards which is only a quarter of the yards we rushed for even with a diminished backfield with Stewart hurt.. You say we rushed for 14 TDs and Cam had less than half those.

You say that he wasn't the only quarterback who ran for over 500 yards while the team ran for less than 2500 total. What?? Seattle did the same thing?? They must not have had a rushing game either. What? They won the superbowl with their lousy running game.............

nevermind

Russell Wilson led his team rushing in one game, and he shared that with Marshawn Lynch.

Compare that to Cam who lead the team in 7 games.

Two different offenses and situations. Wilson is not asked to shoulder the load in that offense like Cam.

I wouldnt say Cam is asked to shoulder the load, he HAS to.  It's not like we didnt try to run with our backs, we just were bad at it.  Less than 1,400 yards for the season from the backfield.  Now I'm no math genius, but divide that by the 16 games we played, thats considerably under 100/gm.

People purely going by stats really doesnt hold an argument, they can't because those can always be skewed.  And they were, there were some games where we only were successful running towards the end of games closing them out when we wore down the defenses.  But going back, look at how many runs on first down were little to no gain or even a loss.  Way too many to be satisfied with our rushing attack.  A healthy Stewart and better line will only help.

How about look around the league with more athletic running quarterbacks.  Off the top of my head Seattle had almost the same stats as us and the running game. took them all the way to the superbowl.  What about San Francisco.  They had 2200 yards rushing and Kaepernick had over 500.  Counting us, that was 3 of the teams that made the playoffs.  I would say it is getting to be pretty normal these days.

True to an extent (for teams with these mobile QBs, that can also air the ball out), but ask any of the coaches would they prefer that the QB run less---due to offensive efficiency , as well as the toll it takes on a QB, not to mention risk of injury---and they will tell you that they absolutely want their guy to run less and pass more.

Even still, the fact still remains that Cam is running more than any QB in the game (and unfortunately for his life many times).  Cam accounted for nearly 29 percent of our rushing yardage, where Kap and Wilson were near 24 and 25 percent, respectively.

Those differences in percentages may seem small on paper, but they loom larger on the field during the season.

No you can't go purely by stats, but you can't ignore them either. As Zod pointed out, don't forget the scrambles by Cam, especially on 3rd down that resulted in 1st downs and kept drives alive. It's certainly more than just overall rushing totals. The biggest factor in all this obviously is our OL, we have who we have, and they are going to have to step up big this year, or it won't matter much who we have back there.

Haha.....great logic.

I don't like facts and stats....I prefer to use my own opinion to refute said facts.

Honestly, I'd rather go by what I see than be a slave to statistics.  By themselves, stats often just don't tell the whole story, especially at certain positions (DT, for one)..

As an example, stats would tell you that Matt Stafford is one of the better QBs in the league.  My eyes tell me different.  Likewise, when the Panthers signed David Carr, I wasn't on board with it.  The people who were kept throwing out that he had the highest completion percentage in the league, to which I responded that completion percentage doesn't necessarily equal accuracy.  When Carr was called on to play...well

Mind you, I'm not saying that I completely discount stats.  I just don't put them all that high in my evaluation process (too many variables).  After 40 plus years of football watching, I know a thing or two about what a good player looks like.  I don't feel like i need a stat sheet to validate what my eyes see.

funny, it's not til the following June after the season has finished and people are now satisfied with the running game.  but damn if it wasnt in the middle of the season last year and pretty much everyone knew it was lacking.  Yay we had less than 1,500 yards combined from the backfield but damn they were the best 1,500 EVER

wait only 1,400, my bad.  Seems like Deangelo one year had 1,550 with Stewart adding another 900.  We should all be satisfied last year right?  Seriously though, hopefully a healthy Stewart and a stronger interior line will get us back up to par.

The running game was inconsistent particularly on first and second down but we were money on third down and fourth down. No one said it was great last year or will be great this year.  But Cam wasn't the reason it was good or bad.  It had to do with the rotating guards every week and problems on the right side.  Cam had little to do with it either way so if you have a point it is hard to figure out what it is.

Riverboat's mind seems to work like it's some kind of zero sum numbers game. "We need to find a receiver that can replace Smitty's 800 yards and Donald's 600 yards and we need to get at leat 100 rushing yards etc."

How 'bout we were 28th in offense and we need to do better. Let's shoot for a gazillion yards and a metric fu(kload of points.

this talk of "4 legit threats in the running game" has jaded my enthusiasm.  Even when healthy I've yet to really see "4 legit threats" take over a game like it's being hyped.

it's all misdirection, hell the media/league already thinks we don't have a receiving core, so let them all focus on the run.

No one should be a slave to statistics as anyone who works with them knows they can prove or disprove whatever you want to depending on which measures you use.  On the other hand eyewitness reports have been proven over and over again to be one of the least reliable forms of evidence?  Why?  Because we see what we want to see or what we expect to see not always what was there.

Doesn't sound like you are arguing like Jeremy that stats are not useful simply that different stats can prove different things and not all numbers or stats are equal.  That is much different.

I have watched football for 50 years and also know what a good player looks like.  However I use all information not selective ones to make my opinion that way not only do I know what my eyes saw, but have evidence to justify my opinion.

    • And he still has one more win and a $110M contract, go figure?
    • People looking at the offense negatively need to step back a minute and remember that expectations were mighty low this year. We have a lot of young guys and rookies. And our qb is a newby in the system he is in with a new coach who has never been a head coach and signal caller combined.  This is a work in progress so only an approach which recognizes incremental improvement is valid for best measuring where we are versus  demanding immediate success after a 2-15 campaign last year.
