Julian Green

Recommended Posts

There has been tons of speculation over why Klinnsman included Julian Green in the World Cup Squad. Some people feel like he was made promises for his commitment to USA Soccer. Personally, I want to see him play. It's like drafting a 1st round pick. You want to see what they are made of even if they aren't quite ready.

Now if you are trying to hold a lead or hold onto a point it's probably best to throw on physical defense minded players. But if you are down a goal, 20 minutes to go, let's see him. Maybe he does something unexpected. Maybe those young legs can abuse a fatigued squad of Europeans sucking hot Brazilian air.

The one thing I would not do is wait until game three. Debuting at the world Cup is a very anxious moment. To do it against the land you grew up in is asking a bit much. Every friend and colleague of Julian will be rooting against him on that day. He should get his feet wet before putting that pressure on him.

If we need a goal in the last 20 minutes of a game, put on Wondo - a guy that thrives off late game goals and has a reputation for always being in the right palce at the right time. Or you put in Johannsson - a guy that contributed 17 goals and 7 assists in 34 appearances in the Eredivisie. The only way Julian Green sees the field in the World Cup is if we lose to Ghana and Portugal, and are already eliminated by the Germany game, or if we are one goal from a point with 10-20 minutes remaining in the Germany game and Klinsi puts him in to flop around in the penalty area.

I want to see what the guy can do as well, but now is not the time and Brazil is not the place. In my not so humble opinion, the World Cup is not when "you want to see what they are made of even if they aren't quite ready." Nope.

There's no mystery as to why Green chose to play for The US. Klinnsman offered him a perk or two and a spot on The United States National Team. Germany did not.

And? Kids like Green are only going to make the USMNT better. If leaving Donovan home is what it took to secure Green for 2018 and 2022 then so be it. Give me a guy who practices against the worlds best any day over a guy who has done everything possible to avoid making that leap throughout his career.

I answered the question. There's no 'and', point blank. We don't even know if Green will truly develop into a great midfielder. He has potential but it's wayyyyyy to early to be claiming he'll make The USMNT better. We should see first how he handles Munich, no?

So you don't think playing against the best on a regular basis will make him a better player? Just look at the players who performed best for the USMNT during this World Cup. Outside of Omar & Yedlin's quality minutes they all have something in common....

Dude, we've seen some fantastic talents just fall apart and never reach their full potential at Madrid. Green is no different. He's 18 and raw as hell. Like I said, the potential is there but he's also on a German club that is incredibly stacked with talent. Green is gonna have to stand out.

If you don't think players are better for practicing against the best IDK what to tell ya. Doesn't matter what sport it is, battling against the best every day will make you better. Is he guaranteed to be a star? Absolutely not, but he will improve as long as he stays in Europe. Product of playing against better competition. I think it's a pretty safe bet to say he's going to make a pretty sizable jump in ability by 2018....

Is this USMNT bias? You damn well know practicing with the best doesn't mean diddy poo. If that was the case, Bell would be a stud on our OL. For all we know, Julian could be the next Higuain -- bursting with talent and potential but flops at the biggest stages despite making a few flashy plays. I'd seriously wait to be jumping to conclusions. Four years is a long time.

This is why I'm not proclaiming that Jese is a star yet.

I don't know enough about soccer to comment on the particulars of Julian Green's game, nor on if in soccer specifically practicing against the best improves you, but I can unequivocally say that in a variety of other sports (basketball, football, tennis) that I have played in or discussed with "serious" (ranked or college) players, it makes a huge difference the level of talent you practice against.  While practicing specifically against "the best in the world" may or may not help you more than "merely" practicing against "some of the best in the world," the talent you practice with can help develop your game tremendously, depending on what you are working on.

I'm pretty sure we even had quotes from some of our offensive linemen back in the early/mid 2000s saying how helpful it was to practice against such a talented DL.  Obviously, you need some talent in the first place, but if you've got it, practicing against good players can only help.

Bell has gotten better if we're being honest with ourselves. His ceiling was/is really low, but anybody who's watched him since he came in as an UDFA can say he's improved. If you're being objective that is...

I, for one, will be trying to keep up with Green and what he does with Bayern II and, if he is moved up, the big club at Bayern. There are stories out there that Tottenham is looking to sign Green away from Bayern. This could be good for him. it would get him more playing time than he might get with Bayern's main club and it would be in the EPL

Don't bring Byron Bell into my Julian Green thread. Athletically speaking they could not be more different.

I wanted to see Green in this World Cup because young men floundering on European benches thrive at the World Cup. They have the talent, knowledge, and confidence to take on the best. If you are 27 floundering on the bench, that is very different than being 19.

Julian Green is at Bayern because they see his talent. If he applies himself he will have more football in his head than any MLS raised player. We haven't considered his skill or athletic ability. It's like comparing a student from a Private School to a student from a low income area. If you play the % the guy with better training is going to pan out more often.

Even if Julian doesn't make an impact at Bayern, a squad that buys players just to keep them away from rivals, maybe he moves on and has a solid career elsewhere. Tim Howard didn't stick at Manchester United, he's still a damned good player.

This guy is a winger that can't get off the Bayern bench either.

But at the end of the day, he could flame out in a year or be better than Messi heading into the next world cup. Even if he is great, he could break his ankle and miss the World Cup. I didn't make this thread about the future.

I wanted to see him right now. We got 15 minutes and I wish we had gotten more.
