What if Byron Bell has a middle of the road 2014 at LT?

Bell is an unrestricted free agent at the end of 2014. If he puts together a mid-tier LT performance in 2014, do you offer him a new contract or do you let him walk with hopes of bringing in a better piece via free agency and/or draft?

You try and refrain from letting all that development just walk out the door. If Gman knows without a doubt that he is at worst a serviceable back-up then you extend him with a modest contract before season starts. If he is better than expected at LT then we don't need him testing the market

i'd like a stud LT, but i would settle for reliable as long as we could keep the same core together heading into next year so that chemistry on the OL can grow. if a stud LT falls into our lap, great, but what we need is an OL that is already gelling together from week one instead of what we've had for years which is an OL that we are still trying to piece together for the first couple weeks.

the OL depth chart, esp. starters, needs to be decided upon no later than the beginning of training camp so that they can spend that time getting reps as a unit with cam. where ths OL is concerned, training camp is no place for try outs for starting positions.

We have to save money somewhere. I hope he is a gamer though. It is important to avoid critical errors that cause losses. In my opinion he did that after the Buffalo game. Mistakes on critical 3rd downs or possible game winning drives make a mid tier left tackle expendable.

Mid-tier is good enough for me. I'd sign him. Also considering he might get better and have a smaller Cap hit.

That said I believe chandler will get the job and do well.

Not for me.

It's not really possible to have great/elite players at every position on the team.  You have to prioritize, and to me left tackle is one of those spots.  The team is giving Bell the chance to show that he can be that this season.  If he doesn't take advantage of that chance, I wouldn't get behind paying him to try again.

if he's only mid-tier, then next season I'm looking at free agency, the draft and Nate Chandler.
