Cam wants more than what Kap got- Ian Rap...

No prob with Cam wanting more and I expect him to get more.

However, I do hope that he does not want to break the bank and this turns into an ugly negotiation.

Hope both Cam and the FO can get a deal done that pays Cam what he is worth, but does not prohibit them from fielding a complete and top team.

Agreed.

However, I think Cam (and his people) have shown so far, the class to refrain from remotely saying anything regarding this, knowing it could get into media.

This appears to be all speculation to grab eyeballs.

Media has to speculate, because they know that Cam will be next up. Gman can franchise him after 2015 season, but then it'll get ugly and Luck and Wilson will already gotten paid. I think it will all be resolve after the upcoming season. Gman has been preparing for two seasons after next year for Cam's contract.

This Carolina team is not exactly a stacked team like the 9ers. In other words, our ass overly depend on the guy. Not like we can bring in a Gabbert to put pressure on Cam. I can imagine Cam and his agent laughing if they bring in some Gabberts to put pressure on him.

Can you imagine if "Kaep" wanted too much money, and Harbaugh, The Front Office brought in Gabbert, and HE HAD GREAT SUCCESS/NUMBERS in the San Fran system/offense to (along with "Kaep" and Alex Smith before him)?? LMAO

I guess this is something Kaepernick didn't want to find out? Lol

cam will have his deal wrapped up by this time next season.  he will get 50+M guaranteed.  cam should not fear that kaep, and his b-list agent, took one in the ass for the 49ers.

what i really feel happened to kaep is that the 49ers are not that enamored with him, so they signed him to bells and whistles contract, then the PR team got in there and told him to spin it as "i did this for the team".

I don't know who Kap's agent is but this is not a good deal.  He can be cut any year before Apr 1 starting next year and it saves the 49ers money.  Also all the de-escalotors he could lose lots of money but can't really gain any.  No good agent would want a deal like that for his client.

Lets see his performance this season before giving him a big contract.

Hopefully, Cam would have a bad year but Panthers keep winning...

Lol you aren't going to be able to get away with that with a guy like Cam Newton. He knows his talent, so does the other 31 teams. You can't give him a shitty contract just because you failed to give him adequate protection and playmakers. He'll go elsewhere before he settles for less than what he's worth. You take Cam off this team and we're the damn Cleveland Browns.

I think you are 100% correct.

And, until there us actual statements from either side talking about an impasse, I will assume that it will get done with little to no distraction.

To me, the moves that we are making now give a clear indication that the Panthers FO are fully prepared to get this done.

The question isn't what he deserves. That is completely subjective. The question is what does he want and what can we afford? Can we win with 1/7th of the Cap invested in 1/53rd of the roster? We've seen 20million a year quarterbacks have success but we've never seen one win the Super Bowl. The last 2 SB winning QBs were on rookie deals.

I went back 5 Super Bowls, no QB had a cap figure over $15m. The other big factor is the rising salary cap. If we can predict that well we can make good decisions. One of the reasons Marty handed out all those gigantic contracts is he expected the cap to go up more than it has. It was a colossal error on his part.

What is your point? He's more than proven his worth to this team. He's getting paid, probably $20-21 million a year.

Unless you want to draft a quarterback every year like the Browns, you pay your very talented young quarterback when you find him.

What have Panthers fans been harping about for the past 3 seasons? "Cam is great but we need a better defense", "Cam is great but he needs a better oline", and "Cam is great but he needs better WRs". So we want to raise Cam's salary from $13m or so in 2015 to $20-22m in 2016. When we do this we expect to surround him with weapons and a stud left tackle. Unless the Cap makes a massive jump the numbers don't add up. Maybe we get the Running Backs off the books by then.

Yeah we have to retain him but it is in our best interest to negotiate a cap friendly deal. If we don't it will be the same story about Cam having no talent around him.

By the way, I don't see Kaepernick's deal as cap friendly. Sure they have the option of cutting ties with him if they can't afford him. But then they don't have a QB. He said he signed the deal to make it easy for the 49ers to sign players around him. The only way the 49ers get cap relief is to cut him or restructure his contract. Guaranteed money is important but people discount base salary a little too much. Base salary in the first 2-3 seasons might as well be guaranteed in conventional blockbuster contracts. Base salary towards the end of contracts is admittedly hot air.

Yes, and those concerns were certainly valid. We didn't do an adequate enough job building around him on the offensive side of the ball (particularly in the draft) in his first three seasons to maximize his potential while he was on a cap friendly rookie deal. That's not his fault.
