The Love Campaign

In two years Kevin Love will be able to opt out of his contract.  It's possible the Timberwolves are looking to trade him this year, but I doubt they would get great return.  The better teams won't have equal value to give them, and if the worst teams traded for him, he will probably elect to opt out the next year.  So two years from now, Love will be a free agent.  Michael Jordan is on record in saying he wants to bring a superstar to Charlotte.  I believe Love is the guy we should go after once he hits the market.  We should use this year to firmly plant the Hornets as a contender.  So here's my plan going into the draft....

9th overall: Nik Stauskas

Potential star-star+ player

24th overall: Patric Young

Up until the Connecticut game, this guy was balling out.  Defensively, no one had an answer for him.  I'm hoping that Connecticut game was just a blip in his game, and is correctable to where he is consistently tough to get around.  I would say he has the potential to be the Lebron James version of Dwight Howard hehe!

These two players will be a start.  I don't know what you do with our second round pick.  I see Stauskas as coming in immediately as our SG and making a name for himself.  With Young, a lot of people overlook this guy but I see him as a great center/power foward.  He can back Big Al up in the event he goes down to injury, and become the starter once Al retires or leaves Charlotte.  The starting line-up heading into next season would look something like this...

PG- Kemba Walker

SG- Nik Stauskas ®

SF- MKG

PF- Josh Roberts

C-  Al Jefferson

With this line up and an athletic bench (Hendo, Patrik Young, etc), we should improve our standing.  We could bring in a couple of vets and trade/release some of the rift raft.  I predict we improve to the number 4 team or better in the East.  The following year Love becomes a free agent.  Since the draft comes before free agency someone correct me if I'm wrong, we'll have another shot at adding another good piece if need be, or trading both picks for a solid player to fill a need.  So our roster in two years would look something like this....

PG- Kemba Walker (maybe)

SG- Nik Stauskas

SF- MKG

PF- Kevin Love

C- Al Jefferson

We could perhaps win a bidding war if we have an outstanding year next year.  Show the league we are serious contenders for the next 10 years.  The Lakers only have Kobe Bryant, and he's not getting any younger.  Pau Gasol looks to be heading out, though he could decide to stay.  That's one thing about the NBA though.  It's less about the amount of money you can offer, and more about the franchise itself.  That's why your famous teams in the league are always at the top.  The only small market team that was able to bring in a star player from the free agent market, is the Clippers with Chris Paul. (I think he actually wanted to be with the Lakers, and the Clippers was a consolation)

Yet we have a secret weapon that I don't think has put his name out there often in drawing in big name free agents.  MJ himself.  Maybe he could convince Love to come win one for him.

MKG will have to be in the deal as well.

Ah, I couldn't add him.  He's too valuable to this team's defense, and his offensive skills are starting to improve dramatically.  The Timberwolves really liked Zeller coming out.  Maybe he alone with the two first rounders would be enough.

Zeller, Hendo, Neal, 9, 24 might get it done. Gets the salaries pretty close and gives the wolves an expiring, a decent 6th man, a young pf and picks to try and replace Love.

Why would they do that when they could get Barnes/Klay + Lee + etc.

    • Him and Sanders are the only QBs I would consider in the first round. I won’t be upset if we take Sanders, unlike some people on the board. Both have potential to be really good NFL QBs if the teams can develop them.  But as we have seen teams are not willing or are unable to now properly develop rookie QBs.
    • I remember the last time we had a Cam at QB in Charlotte
    • Because Young is so historically bad that it just skews too far outside the normal deviations that perspective is easily lost. That or they just don't want to believe it.  The struggles last year would have been more about the infighting and poor roster building or idiot owner's hiring practices than with Stroud. He wouldn't have been as good but he wouldn't have been ruined here and the pressure was not Carr-esk if you take out the Young created portion from his playing style.  Dude is a young guy on a team coached by a Defensive guy building a good D but not building up the O in year 2 of his HC 1st time gig. Seems familiar... Go look at his output this year and not just some crappy Thursday night implosion game, I would take that in a second and never ever look back every time without a shred of doubt while eating 4 of those games a year with a giant smile on my face.
