Cam Newton BELIEVES in the USMNT

Actually, I wouldn't say so. Soccer isn't about size, strength and athleticism. Take a good look at a player like Messi (the former best player in the world). He's not an athletic freak by any means but with his low center of gravity, agility, technique and vision, he embarrasses players twice his size.

No way to prove either way of course, but take a Cam or Lebron and give them a soccer ball at 5 years old and let them play thru college and it shouldnt be that hard to imagine how, wait for it:

brilliant they would be.  I know size, speed and strength isnt everything, but I can guarantee Messi hasnt gone up against the athletic freaks that play basketball and football here in the states.  You cant say they dont have the capability to develop(if they dont have it already) the proper footwork to play futbol at a very high level.

i work with someone from south america, and a week or two ago i was telling him the reason why the USA doesnt do well in soccer and it is because it is between the 4th and 8th most popular sport in our country. although he didnt want to hear it, i suggested that if soccer was as popular as football or basketball in this country, our top athletes would be playing that instead of football or basketball as little children and we would dominate the sport. But instead, we have 3rd tier athletes representing us in the World Cup. It isnt because we lack the athletes, we lack the enthusiasm of the sport as a whole.

coincidentally i was reading a yahoo article this morning suggesting the same thing but just creating a team using only NFL players:

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/what-would-the-u-s--world-cup-roster-look-like-if-it-was-all-nfl-players--135637543.html

I agree fully with the sentiment and have been saying it for a long time, but disagree fully with the athletes he listed. That ruined it.

A colts punter as the choice as striker?? The reason he is playing football is because he wasn't good enough in soccer!

yea that was kinda lame.  this one that they did on nfl site has a somewhat different list.  but i would include some basketball players in there as well.

Yeah, I'd prefer seeing LeBron and Russel Westbrook in the lineup somewhere haha. Jimmy Graham... Yeah ok.

The American squad is a combination of expiring and inexperienced players. In addition, I don't see how this is USA 2002 2.0. That team was at its peak. This one is in the middle of rebuilding a foundation. Talents like Green and Bradley are decent but they're not World Class. Right now, the only World Class player The USMNT has is Tim Howard. So it's difficult for me to see The US standing a chance against a super stacked squad like Germany (who lost a player of Reus' caliber and didn't even blink) and Portugal (who features the world's best player and various up-and-comers).

I will say this, another big injury could very well tip the odds in your favor but it's still a long shot. America needs to practically play flawless futbol for 2-3 matches in order to survive the group of death. Altidore, Beasley, Dempsey, Bradley, Gonzalez, etc all have to be perfect. The problem is Jozy is wildly inconsistent, DeMarcus is old, and Clint appears broken.

I was born here, raised in Europe for 6-7 years before returning, but I'm Mexican, Spanish and Portuguese. Let's not go down this road. Despite reports and Green's interviews, Julian took some convincing to play for The US. In fact, the determining factor was that he wasn't going to play for The German National Team. Klinnsmann offered him a spot and he took it.

Every team has to play practically flawlessly every game in the World Cup. It's the World Cup.

Green saw 10 minutes against Nigeria. He's barely going to play in the Cup. Klinsmann has said himself he's there for the experience. He's too young and too raw for you to be making judgements like that about him. Not everyone is Neymar and becomes a superstar at 19. And everyone who pays attention knows the story about how and why he was chosen.

Bradley's a world class playmaker. Dempsey isn't broken as referenced by the send off series where he's played tremendously.

Of course the 02 team is different than the 14 team. No poo sherlock. I'm not saying they are. Read. T h i s  t e a m  i s  b e t t e r. More individually talented, but lacks the same cohesion, which is fine and will change. It is, after all Klinsmann's first go round, that happens with every country with a new coach.

Difference is Klinnsmann isn't going to just pick and choose the same players Bradley and to some extent Arena did. This team is playing a much more European style of football that requires a different set of players (most significantly players that are great in the air like Zusi,Wondolowski, and Johannsson). He also, understandably wants to go young. Even after all of those changes this team is STILL more individually talented than any other USA side in history.

On another note, we are going to get destroyed. But hey, I'll still root for them and try to watch a game or two.

I don't think you'll see many games where any team gets "destroyed" in the World Cup.

    • We can't afford to reach for one of the first round QBs this year. I would love for nothing more than Bryce to be the reason we don't even scout the bastards
