Hornets Are Interested In McDermott At #9?

This McDermott guy should get checked out. Seriously. He needs medical attention fast. The man is shrinking every day. By the time training camp starts he's gonna be 5'9.

Listen size ain't everything. And skill isn't everything. But when u have enough of both to combine then that's where u see players make jumps and be great players.

Don't get me wrong I want stauskas. But I will not mind mcbuckets. He can shoot lights out and score. I don't care how unathletic he is (even tho he is not). Here's you a white boy who couldn't dribble and couldn't break people down and is a hall of famer. Larry bird. They could shoot lights out and don't need room to score.

Basketball is about fundamentals. It isn't a AND1 league. Although dribbling is a key component of the game. U don't have to be able to cross up Lebeon and break his ankles to be a good basketball player or to get a open shot.

There's these things called screens and such. Or hell why not just do a step back or a pull up. Why does he need to be fancy. I'm sure he and his unathletic white self will be just fine. There have been a lot less athletic guys make an impact in this league.

You do realize that playing a college PF is way different then playing NBA talented wing players?

Clue

The NBA guy are pretty quick on close outs and a lot better at keeping a slower player from the basket.

It is way different for a post college player to switch to a perimeters player. On the defense and offensive end.

Just a question what positions do you think he can play at a starter level?

Mcd was graded out as the 12 or 14th most athletic player in the draft by draftexpress.

You still not not get how easy it is to get the step / angles on a player that has to play you tight.

I think McD can play SF at starter level.

Wow and a few other posters do not understand the value of fundamentals and think the NBA is a pickup game with and1 cross over moves. lol

He isn't shrinking. People made a joke about it but, let me explain why this comment is being made. for the past 4 years McDermott has been listed at 6'8 and even 6'9 by Creighton. When he did his combine measurements he was actually 6'6 and his arms were much shorter than listed at Creighton. Long story short. People were already worried about McDermott's arm size. Now it's worse. He has the arm length of the average PG in this draft.

No, he is 6' 7.75" in shoes, otherwise known as 6'8.  Because player heights are reported in shoes pretty much everywhere

@1:19 - Beats man off the dribble for layup

@2:45 - Beats man off the dribble for layup

You understand basketball man? When people have to play you close, it doesnt take alot to be able to beat them off the dribble.

I don't believe their is anybody on that Providence team worth mentioning. Just because he beats a player off the dribble doesn't mean it's going to always work. The NBA is a completely different animal. He will struggle to get shots off because one he is too slow for the 3 and he is undersized for the 4. He is a tweener and most of the time they don't have too much success. The latest is Derrick Williams who is a straight up scrub.

im still undecided on who id pick at nine (btw, hi all - first post, hope you dont mind me commenting). i like nik stauskas, and think SG is the position in need of most upgrade.... but it seems that alot of picks from 9-18 range are of the same level and so could go anywhere. wouldnt it be wise to trade the #9 pick for the suns or bulls two mid range picks and try and stock-pile assets? - giving us flexibility like the rockets have over the last couple of years for a big trade? - of course this is dependant upon one of those teams falling in love with someone that falls to #9, which maybe might happen if gordon falls.... then with the two picks we may realistically draft adrien payne and whichever wing falls to the second pick (either stauskas, hood, young, harris, lavine or mcdermott)?

if the hornets are to gamble on someone, i think saric is the way to go - i think outside of the top 5, he has the most potential, but i cant see charlotte taking a european big

Welcome!

Don't mind the mindless bickering over McDermott, it will all be over in a couple of weeks thankfully. As far as trading for two, I already feel like 3 rookies is more than we can handle on this team currently, so I wouldn't really want to trade one for two. I don't even think we'll hold on to al the ones we have, much less acquire more.

I think you are confusing tweener with simply unathletic / slow (McD was rated one of the most athletic guys in the draft). A tweener is someone that either 1) in between size and or 2) lacks skills.

McD has more than enough skill to play the SF position. D. Williams did not have the skills to play SF effectively. His skill set was in between a SF and a PF. Hence the tweener tag.

Another tweener is JMM. Doesnt have post skills nor does he have wing skills. Stuck in no man's land.

Yes, exactly. 6'6 without shoes 6.7.75 with shoes. Not seeing why people are arguing with the height here.

Well if we lived in some parallel universe where we compared players by their height without shoes, then he would be 6'6.

Alas, we do not, so Doug McDermott is 6'8

Once again I agree. I'm just trying to point out that someone posted his combine measurements and everyone disagreed with it because they don't know the difference between with or without shoe height.

1st young Larry could handle the ball was a great passer and 6'9.

2nd Larry played in a different time where every team didn't have a athletic 3 or 4 . Like most teams do now.
