9,000 bodies etched into the Normandy sand to represent the dead on the first day of the landing.

Would hate to see what Russia looks like.

Nearly 3 million Germans went to Russia...only about 30,000 made it back.

Heard a stat this morning, that over 60 million people died during ww2 starting at the Japan invasion into Nanking until the end.  Only about 16 million of that number were actually soldiers.

A poignant day. On this day 70 years ago 150,000-160,000 Allied Troops landed on the beaches or Normandy to change the outcome of World War 2 and the life we live today. Some 14,000 dying on this day alone.

Lest we forget.post-15526-140208862524_thumb.jpg

I got the opportunity to go to Normandy/Omaha Beach in April.  I have read about the battle and watched movies on it, but seeing made it really sink in as to just what those guys did.  The beach at low tide is the widest I have ever seen.  The distance from the spot where the landing boats opened their doors to the cliffs was not like crossing the beach at Myrtle or Carolina.  It was about 350 yards or more.  350 plus yards while seasick, soaking wet, and carrying 80 plus lbs of gear.  Oh and Germans shooting at them.  Really an amazing feat.

2 of my grandpas and grandma were fighting for USSR. I brought their medals to US with me. My grandpa was shot 3 or 4 separate times during WW2. They would bring him to hospital, let him rest for 2 weeks and then send him back to front line. My other grandpa fought on front lines and survived the whole war, he got home after war was over and died a week later of natural causes. My grandma was a medic.

My grandpa fought in the African theater. Before he died he wrote about his experiences in the war. Unbelievable stuff. My biggest concern as the years go by is that younger generations of American's will lose appreciation for just how amazing the Greatest Generation was.

RIP Grandpa

My grandfather stormed the beaches of Normandy. He earned a lot of medals including the purple heart. He never wanted to talk about the war. Anytime the war was being discussed he always got a really sad spaced out look on his face. And he was always happy. So many of his friends died there. He was my hero
