Steve Smith was going to retire after the 2014 season

I know it's the off season, but 3 quotes dragging me back to this thread in less than 10 minutes?

He plays for Baltimore, you can scream at the sky about him punching teammates until you are blue in the face. Get over it.

You're right. Are any of the people we brought in right now ones either? I wouldn't say Cotchery or Avant are better and KB is a rookie. We'll see in camp, but if Steve really was going to retire after this year, there really isn't a reason to cut him since it made us lose money.

No they aren't ones either. They however act there part.

Issue is 89s drama and the nonsense he brings. The other 2s are just that.....dudes who will show up and act like 2s. 89 made it about 89, rubbed people wrong, and was an issue for a team that should be lead by Cam, Luke, etc

The Ravens don't seem to think there is a leadership problem.

Then explain to me why as soon as Steve dropped out of the lineup in the Saints game, our receiving game died, or why the Niners were able to contain him in the second half. He was the primary target of defenders the whole year, and when they let off the tight coverage like in the Niners game he did well.

You can always find evidence or examples where Smith absent hurt us but the fact is his best game last season was 69 yds. You have to look at the big picture (over 16 games) and not nit pick certain situations and games.

Steve was our best WR last season which isnt saying much so of course when he went out it would hurt the team.

Not as big a black mark as Steve left on Lucas' face after he talks all about being grown up while the Panthers forgive and forget Steve's previous 2 fights. Then he breaks the trust and pisses all over the organization by getting into a 3rd fight. Some might want to sweep them under the rug, but those are really huge problems that no team should put up with. And we did 3 times. This team put up with a lot of Steve's BS. I don't blame Gettleman one bit for deciding it was time to move on.

You say that as if you or anyone else is an object of perfection, PLEASE. Steve Smith has his faults just as you have yours and I have mine. It wasn't a financial burden for us to keep Smith and he would've retired in 2 - 3 years anyway. Everything a team does impacts fan base and keeping a fan favorite that still contributes play after play after play throughout his career, increases that fan base. In my opinion, Smith's faults never outweighed his contributions to the team, what he meant to the team or what he brought to the team. Steve Smith was the Panthers and I do blame Gettleman. I believe that every team should have some degree of loyalty to his players. However, how that loyalty plays out is based on many, many variables. Apparently Gettleman felt it was neccessary to part ways with our fan favorite. Although I don't agree and won't agree, I am anxious to see what my team, through my GM puts together this year and years to come. I want a Superbowl in Charlotte...

Some of you are mistaking the job descriptions of "Carolina Panthers GM" and "Agent for Steve Smith".

Gettleman is the GM of the Panthers. His interests are in the team, not players or their legacies.

Why some can't get past that is beyond me.
