Steve Smith was going to retire after the 2014 season

He seemed fine against the Niners with a bad leg. Maybe if he wasn't facing constant double teams (like he won't be facing as a #3 slot guy this year) or if we were throwing the ball a lot (like we weren't this year) he'd have had better numbers.

People still suggest he faced the same coverage he did years ago.....he didn't. He played the role of the 1 and got standard 1 coverage.

He wasn't getting doubled all game like years ago.

He got the same type coverage LaFell got when LaFell played the 1 role. LaFell said it is tougher. It is. But 89 wasn't facing old school 89 tactics.....bc he isn't that threat anymore

Then explain to me why as soon as Steve dropped out of the lineup in the Saints game, our receiving game died, or why the Niners were able to contain him in the second half. He was the primary target of defenders the whole year, and when they let off the tight coverage like in the Niners game he did well.

Explain to you what?

He was our 1.

He isn't a 1. At least he isn't what you want in a 1

The season was over, who said that he hadn't been running like that in previous off seasons? Even if he didn't, so what? Honestly, you making a jump from a simple comment he made to questioning his overall effort while with this team while he was here is disgusting.

Wanna know what's disgusting? Beating 3 teammates

The way I see it, he got a pass for those violent incidents.......if he had tried that under the new regime he would have been long gone. He was lucky thst the F.O. back in the day didn't have the balls to act.I know if you or I punched out a co worker our ass would be canned and probably sued.No excuses...young or old.

I sure hope nobody haunts you every chance they get for any mistakes you've made when you were younger.

One time mistake, two times I don't think so, three times violent trending behavior. Try that shi# at your job and see what happens.

I never agreed with cutting anyway, whether we knew he would retire or not. It doesn't take a genius to know that Smith would only play 1 to 3 more years. Why not let him retire a Panther. Gettleman will always have that black mark on his record for me...

Not as big a black mark as Steve left on Lucas' face after he talks all about being grown up while the Panthers forgive and forget Steve's previous 2 fights. Then he breaks the trust and pisses all over the organization by getting into a 3rd fight. Some might want to sweep them under the rug, but those are really huge problems that no team should put up with. And we did 3 times. This team put up with a lot of Steve's BS. I don't blame Gettleman one bit for deciding it was time to move on.
